PVC

PCGS just returned two silver coins to me ungraded with PVC. Can anyone explain what this means and if the PVC can be removed. Both coins are beautiful mint state with original lustre.

PVC is a plastics residue which gets on your coins from being stored in the wrong type of plastic flips. There are several dips which will remove the PVC residue from the coins without damaging them. These solvents are available through must coin dealers or on the net.

A nice new cotton ball will clean a lot of this off if not all.

Just did it with a few pieces in my toned box that were in bad plastic.

Always use the hard plastic flips, not the soft ones. They are full of PVC

  • If the damage is too serious and the coin value justify, I suggest that you consult Numismatic Conservation Services at

I used their service and I can recommend.

A quick rinse with acetone will remove "PVC." I used quotes around the term PVC, because most of what PCGS identifies as PVC isn't PVC, it's just a foreign substance on the surface of the coin.
