Try grading this old half.

I'm not sure if the pic is good enough, but I'd appreciate a try. I do not know it's actual grade. It has quite a bit of color to it, but looks grey staight on. I cant see any wear, only that small ding on her cheek.

Cool coin image Strike vs. wear from a scan is hard to judge on those old coins.

Very nice looking coin. But I'd say NG - Cleaned or Whizzedimage

I think the color is the result of an old cleaning.

  • One of the nicest things about this coin is how sharp the stamps are. I guess I should try to angle the light a little differently and show it off. It' amazing a coin that old can look so new (other than finish).

NG Cleaned or whized would suck. I'm not sure how to tell it.
  • Very neat! Probably a nice AU58...I don't really see any wear on the obverse, but the reverse looks like it has a bit of rub. Could be a weak strike, though...something like this I'd have to see in person. Or even better, somebody else would have to see it in person, cuz I'm not the best with those old bust coins.

I think it's worth $15 to find out. It looks like a very nice coin and I like it.

$15 is what it costs to have a coin graded at pcgs under economy level.

sometimes you can see metal buildup around the devices, ;ettering etc. A good halogen helps too.

  • It's a beautiful coin and I don't see any of the problems my 1827 bust half has. I'd say it's a good MS63 candidate. Most of you are saying AU, but I just don't see anyplace that shows wear. I think what's going to hurt it the most are the nicks on the obverse.

I think it is a nice BU piece.

To check for an old cleaning, use a 5x-7x loupe and look for hairlines or swirls. If you don;t notice it the graders shouldnt either (hopefully)

    nice coin BTW

  • Hair behind the ear area looks a little flat. AU58image I also would have it graded just to
get it protected in a holder.

AU55-58. I see color shift indicating light rub on the wing of the eagle and in Liberty's hair. Since I cannot twirl the coin and inspect its color and surfaces in person, I cannot tell whether it has been cleaned - but the images do not reveal any cleaning.

That appears to be a beautiful AU coin that any collector would be proud to have in ones collection. It

probably has been cleaned , but what hasnt. Get it graded by PCGS and let us know the results.

    Good luck. Bear

It may be cleaned, but so many of the bust halves are. It is unusual to find one with totally original surfaces, even amongst slabbed coins. I don't see hairlines from cleaning, but it's also possible that the toning is hiding it. As often the case, it's hard to tell by the scans.

The toning looks OK. It doesn't look artifical, as in chemically induced, but could be "retoning" over an old cleaning. If this is the case, it probably wouldn't grade at PCGS.

I'd say it could grade from AU-55 through MS-61. If the flat area in the hair is from rub, as is likely the case, then it'll go 55 or 58. Otherwise, if it's just from strike, MS-61 would be my guess.

PCGS and other services tend to be tougher on old classic coinage in low mint state grades. Whereas a MS-61 Morgan dollar or modern coin often connotes an ugly one, there are many beautiful capped bust coins in 60,61,62 that got there because of weak/uneven strikes and lack of luster.
  • Slam dunk = Cleaning

If you have seen many of these you can tell almost immediately.

Either way a darn nice coin!

PCGS cuts no slack on coins from this era--I think it is a no grade with PCGS, and ANACS AU details--Cleaned Net grade XF.

Is there a letter in the clasp on the drape? If there is graphitti it may not grade anyway--Tooling...
