Just how bad is this large cent?

I can't even remember when or how I got this coin. It has been at the bottom of my junk box for years. I don't have much experience with these things but let me try:

It is scratched with a green corrosion spot on each side. Pretty bad, and hardly worth anything.

So does that green spot really look like corrosion? I assume it is permanent damage and can't be removed, is that right?

I would like a cheap large cent for my type set, but guess this won't do. Comments appreciated.

It looks pretty light, just scrape it off with your fingernail.
  • The green spots look like verdigris, a common affliction of copper coins. Suggest you soak the coin in olive oil for a month or more before attempting removal. Very likely, however, the surface of the coin is corroded especially if the verdigris has been there for awhile. If the verdigris is not removed it will likely grow in size.

  • Thanks gang. I'll soak in olive oil for a month. I'll describe it as an experiment to my daughter and she will get a kick out of it too.

You can try Blue Ribbon coin conditioner also. It doesn't have to sit for a month with that stuff. Should come off fairly easily. Good luck!
