I have a counterfeit Washington Quarter....

I can't post pic's here, but if anyone is interested in posting them, I can email the scans. A friend that works at a bank picked this one up the other day. It appears to be made of lead and to have been plated. Strangest thing I've seen. Until the pics are available, it's a 1967 Washington Quarter. Neat, if nothing else. Looks to have had the obverse and reverse put together. You can usually find two headed examples like this one, but why they have the obv. and rev........who knows?

Sure, I would be happy to post the pictures. I am also interested to see how it is a counterfiet.

Please email the pictures to me at jahns@chartermi.net

    Thanks!

  • How does its weight compare to that of a normal quarter?

  • My girlfriends father just showed me a 1965 Washington that he has had since 1969 that looks like a cast copy made of lead. It is noticeably lightweight, but looks good to me other than the weight.

I am looking to get it weighed now. I don't have a scale. I believe it to be heavier than a normal quarter. When I first saw the coin, I thought someone may have split it in two, and readhered it

    Thanks for the pics!!!!!!! imageimage

  • Why the heck would anyone counterfeit a quarter? I'm sure it would cost more than .25 to melt and cast it.

You could buy a gallon of gas for 25¢ in 1967.
  • Good point, maybe it was worth making one in 1967, but I doubt if its worth it now. Also doubt if it is lead since that would be heavier than a standard quarter, not lighter.

Hey that's pretty cool BigD5! With the copper showing through it makes me think of a coin that a metal detector guy dug up and cleaned that the clad layer had corroded through.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Dog, when I first saw the coin, my initial thought was it was going to be a two headed quarter, that someone had split and readhered. That wasn't the case. Then I thought some bored stiff may have split the coin, and removed the copper, inner layer and fused the two halves back together........no again. The coin will bend very easily in my fingers, and it looks plated.
I'm with the thinking of "why?" It really doesn't make too much sense, but it's here. I wish I could get a pic. of the rims, so everyone could see where the coin looks to have been put back together, or the remnants from the cast mold.
Anyone know what these things might be worth? Again, it's not my coin, but the owner will probably want to sell it.

They are technically illegal to buy sell or even to own. The feds usually look the other
way unless a fake is being sold to defraud. Counterfeits often sell for a dollar or two
but specialists may sometimes pay more for ones which are scarce, famous, or contem-
porary. There are still some fake quarters being made. The secret service busted up
a large east coast ring a couple years ago. They had passed many thousands of good
quality fakes. A South American ring was recently arrested for counterfeiting Sac dollars
for use in the Dominican Republic.

  • At least they spelled the word "quarter" right. COINage ran an article a few years back on counterfeits, and showed a photo of a counterfeit quarter misspelled "quater!" image
