Bad news, low grade

In a couple of threads I commented on a 1950 proof Lincoln that I thought would score a high grade. Just got the results of my submission. Only a proof 64 red. Clearly, Im disappointed and thought that this coin had a shot at a pr67 with its strong strike and detail. Oh well.... I will stick with my proof Washington specialty and my new interest of rainbow proofs-- at least I know how to grade those. cheers, alan mendelson

Russ, if you recall I drooled all over the place the first time I saw your magnificent scan, and in a response asked that you keep me in mind if you want to sell it. Im still drooling. I think you said you were sending it in to be slabbed? cheers, alan mendelson

    Alan,

It is, indeed, in at PCGS right now along with it's siblings, the nickel, dime and half. It arrived on 12/19, which means I should have the results about the middle of June (at the speed submissions are currently moving). I'm just hoping the group avoids a body bag. I don't know if the graders have ever seen any like these. I know I hadn't until I bought this particular proof set!

The bonus for me is that the half is an Accented Hair.image

Perhaps you won't have to wait till June... the report I got today (with shipping today) was sent to PCGS on Dec. 16th. cheers, alan mendelson
  • Russ,
You guys are in another class all by yourself and I have to say I have never seen something as breathtaking as the scan of the proof quarter! A coin like that makes a person famous for a long, long time.
BTW, your smaller scan of a walker as your latest walker, I can't make it out. Of course everyone knows walkers rule and I'd like to see it if it's up in your set.

    Dick,

    Larger scan of the Walker:

This is actually the pic from the auction. Haven't had time to do my own pic yet. It's a good one, though.image

    Alan,

What submission level was yours? Modern, regular, economy?

It was sent in as a regular submission, 30 days I believe is what they advertised??

By the way, any guesses as to what your rainbows will grade -- assuming that they're not criminally bagged??

    cheers, alan

    Alan,

Normally I make grading guess notes on all my coins I send in. On the submission these are on, I did that only for the regular coins because I have no idea how the graders will react to these toners. From a technical standpoint, I'd put the quarter and dime at 67, and the half and nickel at 66. But, we shall see.

  • Russ, you said you bought that quarter in a proof set...was it still in Mint
packaging, and did you send it in that way?
  • RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
    Solid,

It was still in the mint packaging, but no I didn't send it in that way. I did, however, call Charlie Kahler ahead of time and told him about this submission and the origin of the coins. I also told him that if he wanted to avoid an angry phone call when the results are posted, he should be down in the grading room babysitting.image Oh yeah, and David Hall is aware of this submission.

Solid raises a valid point: can such unusual coins be sent in their mint packaging for grading? and, another question: can coins in such mint packaging be AT'd ?? cheers, alan mendelson
