HAS THE MINT ANNOUNCED ANY COMMERATIVES FOR 2003?

I should know this but haven't seen any info on it anywhere. I have been watching Coin World & The US Mint Web Site but haven't seen anything.

Thanks, GrandAm

The proposed designs were in CoinWorld (not the current issue, but the one before the current issue)
  • There are also 3 pieces of legislation currently under consideration for commemorative coins. The law currently allows 2 commemorative coin issues per year to be produced by the Mint. And since there has to date only been one approved - we may yet see another.

One interesting note - the First Flight coins will include a $10 gold - first time in quite a while for a $10 instead of a $5 gold. Ther ewill also be a $1 silver & half dollar clad.

  • I like collecting commemoratives, and now that I see it offered in $10 gold this may very well be my first gold piece.
How solid do you think the interest will be in this coin.

    Laserart,
I hope the $10 gold has low collector interest. Then the mintage will be very small and aftermarket price will go up. The more popular the modern commems the higher the mintages.

Well, first time since 2000 (unless you don't count that one, since it was gold and platinum). Otherwise, you're back to 1984 with the Olympic eagle.
  • the gold numbers aren't generally as high as the silver, makes for fewer buyers

  • how do you pre order things like this ? or is it not possible ?

  • ForceSHO, the issuance will be Aug 1 '03. The mint is stating it will be accepting prepaid orders beforehand and to keep checking their web site for details as they become available.
How many collectors here will be ordering one, or more?

  • I will order a few.....although I doubt they could ever be as popular as the buffalo is.
  • It could be a long time for something to come along and outpace the buffalo. I'm wondering if next years Lewis and Clark will be popular.
