Check those ANACS Grades

Maybe I have just been lucky, but over the past two months I have had the oportunity to send three ANACS graded coins to be crossed over to PCGS and NGC. All three received an increase... the first was an ANACS 1883 PR65 Dime - NGC said PR65 Cameo. The second was a 1926 Far 6 Canadian nickel - ANACS said AU53, PCGS said AU58, the third was a 1944-D Walker, ANACS said MS64, PCGS said MS65....

I can't tell you when the ANACS graded these, but it has me looking at other coins to see if there are other mis-grades.

Anyone else see ANACS undergrades???

I used to use ANACS almost exclusively and a about three or four years ago they got really tough on grading. I have had most of my more expensive coins regraded by PCGS or NGC and almost all were graded a point higher than ANACS had graded them. mike image
  • I like to buy ANACS coins because they undergraded, many by quite a bit.

I sent them a 1931 64FB and received back a 65FB! So far one for one!

Boy I hope your right. I got a ANACS MS65 toned Peace @ NGC now. I would love a 66, but I doubt it.

And I just picked up a 27 ANACS MS63 toned Peace that's going to NGC as well, but again I doubt it since I only paid 62 money for it.

But I guess I can cross my fingers and say a little prayer to the Grading Gods!

I have some ANACs graded coins...some were undergraded and others were graded accurately. I like the graders at ANACs because I think they make an effort to be helpful...especially if you submit coins at a show. Finally, they recognize varieties which I truly helps not just the collector but the hobby in general. My two biggest complaints are I think their grading can be inconsistant at times and their economy service is slow. I will use them in the future (as well as NGC and PCGS).

I have, for some time, thought ANACS is at least as tough as PCGS and NGC. In circulated grades, even tougher.

Yes anacs has very good grading skills. From what i've seen they seem to be on par with the top 2. The only thing i don't like about anacs is the size of there slabs they slid around when there inside a slab box.
  • I like ANACS as well! I have a couple at NGC now. The last ANACS MS66 Morgan I sent to NGC, came back NGC MS66. I have picked up several ANACS MS65 DMPL's, they are super coins! I don't know if I should send them to PCGS or NGC or just leave them in the ANACS holders??

banknote, If you love those coins why would you submit them anywhere?? They are already holdered.

    just curious

I have several ANACS coins of various key dates and I refuse to play the "game" with PCGS or NGC.
  • Goose;

I know we would rather our coins- as Collectors- be slightly undergraded vs overgraded, but isn't the sign of a great Grading Service consistancy? If ANACS is undergrading some coins the hobby is almost just as hurt as coins that are overgraded (within a point or so).

I've only had ANACS experience with Morgans, but in that regard I am convinced ANACS doesn't have a clue much of the time, and expecially in circulated grades. I have, however, gotten about half of their XF45 coins to cross. On the other hand, I've never gotten any of their VFs to cross at the same specific numeric grade (35, 25, etc.). All have come back lower by five to 10 points.

Just to be fair, though, NGC has been almost as bad.

In the past, I have never been able to get Washington Quarters in ANACS holders to cross into PCGS, even though In my opinion they were right on. I tried three different MS-63 32-d's and not a single coin came back in a PCGS-63 Holder. Yet all crossed into ICG at the same grade(63)

I did have good luck on some key-date v-nickels in the ms-63 thru 64 range.

Also, the comment about VF/ XF Coins especially SLQ's and Barbers most ANACS coins I have seen are about a half grade below PCGS standards, and will not holder in the same grade whether crossing or breaking out??

  • I don't like that anacs uses smaller sized slabs either. But I also agree that they tend to undergrade, I'll find out for sure when I submit my pf-65 3 cent to pcgs in a month.

I'm with DennisH on the circs. I just hate to see a FINE that doesn't have the 2 lines on the cotton balls. Sometimes their DMPLs only make PL at PCGS but the numerical MS grade always stays the same.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
