Trial Strike Buffalo Submitting ?

I have what I am pretty sure is a trial strike buffalo. It has the appearance of a VG but is UNC and full of mint luster, not a trace of wear. I want to get this coin slabbed but not sure who will do it (prefer ANACS only because they don't require membership fees). Will ANACS slab this as a trial strike if that is indeed what it is? If not who will?
I have uploaded images of the coin. Here is my disclaimer: These pictures are not near as good as those many of you have posted as I am still trying to figure out my Olympus C3000 and lighting.

Thanks,
Aaron

Why do you think the coin is a trial strike?

ANACS would slab a trial strike, but I can assure you that your coin is not. It has far too much detail for a trial strike.

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but are you sure that what you've got isn't a machine polished circ? That's kinda what it looks like to me, but again, the photos are a little blurry.
  • AAron,

Buffalo 5c 1926 D & S mints are probably the poorest struck of the Buffalo Nickel series. More likely worn dies rather than a trial strike.

aeast236 I assume you know the difference between luster and shine from a polishing so if you say it's ms then I take your word for it.
With that being said it looks like a weak strike to me. To answer your ?? ANACS, PCGS, & NGC will properly attribute it under their error service.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Thanks for your comments. I have shown this coin to many collectors in this area and it actually served as part of a program at our Coin Club. I am not entirely sure it is a trial strike but in terms of detail (i know the pictures are blurry) it has the exact detail that I would expect from a VG. However, there is no wear, fields are clear, and it has the same amount of luster that I would see in a MS holder. Perhaps I should send it to Coppercoins for a picture so that we all can look at it? I am stumped to what it is?
In response to a weakly struck date. I know that this particular date was weakly struck but this is a little beyond weakly struck IMO.

So what's the difference between a set up strike and a weak strike? None.
Yours is not weak enough to be a bonafide acceptable set up strike.

  • The difference, and I guess I wasn't real clear, is that on all the buffalo's I have seen that are deemed weakly struck, and are typically a weakly struck date, I have yet to see one this weakly struck. I guess I may need to do more investigating. It probably isn't a trial strike, perhaps I was getting my hopes up, but even still I have never seen one that looked like this and I've been in the stampede for awhile.

I'd send it off to ngc to have David Lange take a peak at it. You'll get an answer. I'm curious, to say the least image

Head to the ngc board, and make a post about the coin, David Lange will answer your question. Amazing concept on that side of the street. image
