Effect of "Hair"?

How does "hair" on the edges of cards effect their grade? I have some with a 5 o'clock shadow, and some with 2-day old scruff. I'm assuming the result of a very dull blade, but there is very minimal if any border chipping as a result. Anyone with experience submitting these?

Thanks,
Bernie

    Bernie,

I've got a few 9's and even one 10, with "ragged" edges like you're describing. I don't believe that its taken into account.

While I agree that "hair" usually does not effect the grading of the card, I do believe it effects the overall apeal of the card. I believe that a 9 with rougher edges is not as nice as one without those rough edges. I understand with some issues such as Opeechee it is unavoidable, and the rough edge card is the more authentic, but with other issues it is avoidable. I guess that goes back to the old stand by of "buy the card and not the holder."

    LJB,

Agreed... I have to admit that when the "10" arrived in a trade looking a little rough on one side - it sort of took some of the luster off for me.

Thanks for the help. I was afraid the subjective "overall eye appeal" part of the grading process would hurt the grades. Some of the cards look like there are tentacles coming out of the edges. Hopefully, no nightmares.image

  • I bought a 1956 PSA 6 rare common on the cheap from Brucemo just to break out and resubmit (it was worth a shot). When I received the card, I broke it out and inspected it closely. The only thing keeping this card from an 8 holder was the fact that it had 2 adjacent edges that were rough cut. The corner where the 2 rough edges met had a very "hairy", unsharp corner. I used a razor and carefully "trimmed" the hairs from this corner. It came back an 8 as it should have the first time.

By the way, since I was able to add this to my 8 set saving several hundred $$, I offered the 7 and any other dupe 7 I had upgraded to Brucemo ( who I knew was building this set in 7) for whatever he offered me. I have had only great dealings with Bruce. Thanks!!

PSA officially says that rough cuts do not affect the grading of cards. I think for some issues, at least a minor rough cut is preferable. 1970s OPC cards come to mind, for example...
