I know "Old Topic" but lets hash this over again. For Everyone.

Luster, Strike, Eye Appeal, Bag Marks. These all enter into the grade of a coin. I guess what brought this on is that for the last couple of years every 1926D Merc Dime, with the exception of the one that was just auctioned at Fun, I have seen in higher grades than the MS63 coin I have were not worthy of buying to put into the collection just because of Strike problems that have been seen.

Does anyone else have this same problem when looking at a date that is well known to have strike problems ? To me it just makes sense to keep the lower grade coin untill All criteria are met for yourself before upgrading. What coin in a series you collect do you have this same problem with ? Basically I just wonder if being picky is the best answer in the long run. image

Here is the 26D. its going to take a very nice coin to dis-lodge this coin from the collection.

I agree with you. In the Franklin series there are a couple of dates 1953P and 1951S that generally have horrible strikes. I've been fortunate enough to find pieces that fit my collection, but am always on the hunt for pieces that would have better eye appeal AND don't cost an arm and a leg. Sometimes it is better to keep the piece you're comfortable with until the killer piece that you really want and can afford comes your way.

    Ken,

You know how I feel. Keep your coin until you find a better one. The 26-D is tuff to find with a nice strike, but you will find one. The 26-D you have is NICE!

You and Frank are right.I've been holding off buying a lesser grade coin, just to complete my Registry Set.It is frustrating to say the least.image I have tried everything(making, crossingover).I don't know what the answer is.The only thing is to ask all the members of this board to keep a look out for what you need. That is a lot of eyes looking.I believe we should help each other.I have called upon other board members to help look.

  • I never paid much attention to strike on proof Jefferson nickels. I now realize that some earlier ones weren't struck all that perfectly. Especially SMS Jeffs which I consider proofs. I don't think it is that hard to find well struck ones with the cameo contrast I'm looking for though...

I have recently decided to buy some fillers for my type set. I have gone too long without adding to that set. Since very few sets are complete if I buy a few coins I can get back into the top 5. I will try to find some circulated coins with eye appeal. My hope is that I will do alright when upgrading in the future.

In the Walker series, most of the later S mint pieces have poor strikes. For me the key is to recognize a good strike for the date. That standard is very different between a 41S and 41P. Once you find a good strike for the date, take it. A perfect one will likely never come along.

    Hi Ken,

That is a really nice 26-D! I just today bought the 26-D 64FB from the J.B. Steven registry set. I will pick it up from J.B. tomorrow and will try to post some pictures tomorrow on this thread for your comments if time allows.

    Hi Ken,

Here are the photos of the 26-D 64FB I bought from J.B. There is some weakness on the "ONE" and the U in under on the reverse, and the IBE of liberty on the obverse. It has a nice even pale champagne toning.

    Wayne:

Looks to be pretty darn nice. Full mint mark from the picture and good bands, well not good but real good. Typical weakness in the border area but not bad. Nice Dime and not easy to find. Hope some of the others chime in on this one.
