  • There's no question, when a set is added to the SMR, it gains newfound popularity. People suddenly feel more confident to buy the cards for some reason.
Now would be the time to snatch up some 9's . So whattya got there Murcerfan?

    Spread the wealth!

Yo murcerfan, I met you at the Fort Washington show. Hope everything is well.

Are these similar in size to the 69 set? Black and White? Color? And of course, how hard is the Rose to get in PSA 8?

    Thanks

I remember you 1420. the '74's are an oversized (3x5 ish) highly glossed black and white issue printed on thin stock either white or grey on the back. the fancy cut adds to thier fragility.

steve werly bought this set and may still have the rose (he'll be high on price unfortunatly)

Murcerfan- The '74 Deckle Edge has always been a great set. I think finding these cards in 8 or better is a huge challenge -- though to properly evaluate the grade of a card takes a long time if you look at every bubble along the edges. I am lucky enough to have purchased a Carlton and a Luzinski PSA 9 some time back, and I believe I might know where one or two 10's from the set are. It is just a very tough issue to find in the first place, and if you add in the size, it makes it all the worse. I like the Black & White aspect of it -- and I hope this set continues to get support.

I wish I would of jumped all over the Ted Simmons PSA 10 that was on eBay back in late October...i believe it came from Bob Earhart's collection.

PSA10fan or MikeSchmidt- Was the card sold to a private collector or a dealer. Do you guys think this card will ever see the light of day again?

How do these compare in scarcity, condition sensitivity, and value to the 69s that I am more familiar with?
    Looking for 77 cloth 9s and 10s.

    LJB17:

To quote oldbaseball.com, here it is:

    1969 Deckle Edge:

"One of the more well known Topps insert sets, these 2 3/16" x 3 3/16" black and white photos came packaged with Topps third series (and possibly higher) cards in 1969 and a checklist for the set is found on the regular third series checklist. Two substitutions were made: Wilhelm was pulled and replaced by Wynn and Le Grande Orange was yanked in favor of Joe Foy. Wilhelm had been traded by the Pale Hose to California prior to the season and Staub was sent packing from Houston to the Expos as part of the ill-fated Donn Clendenon trade. Why they were pulled I have no idea. Airbrushed logos appear on the Wilhelm and Staub cards, but other players in the set have suffered a similar fate as well. The deckle edge refers to the borders, which look like they were cut with pinking shears. A blue facsimile autograph rounds out the front. Cards with red autographs are proofs and cards with black autographs were issued by O-Pee-Chee in Canada. The backs contain a small descriptive box and not much else. This is a popular set that went through at least two printings, so finding these cards is fairly easy."

    1974 Deckle Edge:

"Measuring 2 7/8" x 5", these are larger than their illustrious ancestors, but lack the charm of the earlier issue. Full bleed photos, scalloped edges and a facsimile autograph are nice, but give me those 69 inserts. The backs have a "handwritten" notation from the player pictured on the obverse above a newspaper type clipping and are printed on either gray or white stock, one of which was the test issue version. A truly scarce test issue, these are seen every once in a while, but prices are sky high. And hey, are those logos I see?"

The 1974 Deckle Edge set routinely sells for over $1,000 in NM or better condition. The 1969 Deckle Edge -- though hard to find in top condition, rarely commands even $100. The 1974's are quite larger and much more attractive. A scarce test issue -- they don't make their way to market very often.

Complete '74 deckle edge sets in Nm or better condition never sell below $4,000 (any more).
If you should see one "routinely" for $1,000 buy it and sell it to me for $2,000.
I'm not so sure about the lack of charm vs. those cheap little '69 inserts either...........
but lot's of us have already learned to live with that problem.

    Murcerfan-
This is set is very undervalued. I believe that if this set were to hit Mastro or another auction house you would see a complete set sell for over $3000 raw. If it was graded with PSA 8' and 9's, it would probably sell in the range of $9000. So tough to complete in high grade. I am with you on buying these sets all day long for $2000 in nrmt condition.

    Shane and Murcerfan:

Yes -- my original estimate of $1,000 was quite low. However, I believe the last set that sold was in Mastro's latest auction. The final hammer price on that set was $4,650, and the set contained many NM/MT and MINT cards. Now they were definitely all raw -- but Mastro is usually pretty close on their raw grade estimations (they don't typically grade raw sets two to three grades over their true grade). Thus -- not sure what a raw NM set is worth. There are actually quite a few SGC 84 and SGC 86 commons on Ebay now -- some that have not even gotten their $1 minimum bid yet.

At any rate, it is truly a beautiful set.

Does anyone remember what the high bid was for the Ted Simmons PSA 10 Deckle Edge that sold on eBay at the end of October?

    Neal:

Check Ebay out for scans of some of the commons -- there are a few listed there.

Also, the Mastro auction lot displays the Rose Deckle Edge card:

    Neal, click on my link.
    Shane, you're right.
MS, I just returned two "mint" cards to the dealer who bought aforementioned set.
they had dinged corners and (as usual) the Mastro gang had given themselves generous grades.
so I'll stick with my statement and add that there is not so much differentiation in selling price of sets at or above NM. problems with the gloss and deckle dings are often "overlooked" until professional graders do their thing.
Baslione, IF I recall the Simmons 10 went between 250 and 300 (i may be off on this).

Thanks Marc - those are cool cards. Looking forward to the new SMR to see what the ballpark is on a PSA 7-8 Rose.

Murcerfan - what link? Thanks again.

You two going to the Fort again?

  • I sold several high grade cards from this set, that I broke up, at The National last year. I had a Rose PSA 9, Ryan 8, Munson 8, Yaz 9. Most of what I sold was over the new SMR. This set was a very popular display case for me there. I just sent in the last 22 cards that I had, that were worth grading, to PSA.

well........the sgc 7's on e-bay brought about $32 apiece. a few went quite a bit higher.
not bad considering that group had problems with the gloss to the extent that psa rejected them
(no....... they weren't mine). I'd have to say they are HOT stuff now despite only a minimal showing here on the registry (so far).
    Marty.
Good Luck on the grades (hopefully Darth Grader treats you better than the Overlord of network 54).
How much do you figure my Ryan psa 9 would fetch?
    Neal.
the link was a few posts back and was to a lot description from Mastro's latest.

I am considering the consignment of my PSA 9 (1 of 2 with none higher)
........ to Superior for the Nationals auction, perhaps.
I figure C.P. can hype it up as the most valuable or "key" card of any/all issued in the 1970's.
Realistic offers will also be considered.

For a 25% cut from the buyer/seller combined.....I hope its one heck of hype job.

  • Basilone,
I don't recall who bought the Ted Simmons 10. I might be able to dig through my records and find that information.
I was fortunate enough to acquire the Brock, Reggie Jackson, and two Aaron 10s from this set. If anyone wants a scan, let me know. They're gorgeous cards, particularly in PSA 10.

While I would love the PSA 9 Nolan Ryan, I probably cant spend that much on the card, so I am most likely looking for a PSA 8.
