How would you grade this 1827 bust half?

This is a coin that is in my future submission box for PCGS but after closer examination, I fear that It may not be worth the trouble. Your thoughts here are much appreciated and if you collect this type of coin, I REALLY want to hear from you (this example is the only bust half I have. It should be noted that there are not marks like these on the reverse for whatever reason. Last in a roll???

MS-64 if the scratch lines are on the holder.
Au-58 if they are on the coin.

Look at the plate coin here.
Its a ms-65. The flat spots might be from the die and not wear.
  • AU, it might have been cleaned lightly also.

Are those scratches on the face i am seeing?

"The silver is mine and the gold is mine,' declares the LORD GOD Almighty."
  • I actually only noticed one before you brought the others to my attention image

Unfortunately, they are on the coin but are very, very light.

I'll take a stab at it and say AU55

"The silver is mine and the gold is mine,' declares the LORD GOD Almighty."
  • Definetly AU because of the slight rub on the curls. The coin looks original to me. The light scratches do detract from the coin a little, I hope the're on your holder and not on the coin.

Looks like a nice original Bust Half. It's hard to find Bust Halves that haven't been harshly cleaned.

  • AU 55/58 depending on how severe the wear is.

I just got one back, similar to yours kinda, mine was bodybagged because of "questionable color"

It looks like she got into a knife fight with OJ.

    AU-50

The toning may be due to old cleaning so it may be a bodybag canidate.

I was going to grade it AU-58, but once I had OJ in my mind it went down a few points

It's definitely AU but also a strong candidate to get bagged depending on how deep and vivid the colors are. In no way am I suggesting that they are actually AT, I am suggesting that in the current climate PCGS may bag the coin in fear that it may be AT.

It's no lower than AU55, and probably AU58. I've seen coins 62'd or 63'd with similar rub, but only where they have booming underlying luster. I can't comment on the AT issue. Don't know. It definately 'looks different' from most AU Bust Halves I've seen though.

Looks nice to me, say a 55/58, but the toning may be questionable. check to see that the scratches arent actually raised with 30X and not die polish lines....the toing may be hiding the tiny ones........????

    Draco,

I like the coin, and love Bust halves. I've been looking at the pic for some time, trying to figure out what bothered me about the toning. I finally figured it out. The wear that is evident on the coin, being an entirely different hue appears to have occured after the coin was originally toned. That's possible, but unlikely. JMO

Here is the one I got back - the pink is an artifact of my scanner.

Mine is dead (no luster) and the fields have that darkgrey/green which may suggest a toning attempt gone bad - live and learn - at least I don't buy scrubbed/cleaned old silver anymore. I like your purple around the edges, but the rest of the fields look kinda like mine.
  • I'll probably send it in with a few others this week. I'll be sure to post the results.

Thanks to all for you opinions image
