PCGS Grading - Save your money for now!

Very few smiles at the FUN show coming from the PCGS booth. No one I spoke to received upgrades. I submitted a great 1874 IHC 66R NGC for crossover and would have accepted a 65R - didn't even cross at the 65R level. Talked with a registry set owner and he agreed it is better than his 65R PCGS. After hearing the moaning, I couldn't resist submitting 4 coins, 3 for regrade - the only one that came back correct (IMHO) was the reholder for variety designation.....image

Hey Tim I saw your coins and I agree with you. You weren't the only one commenting about how tough they were. There was a lot of grumbling on the bourse floor. Some of it came from dealers who post here. I wonder if we will hear anything from them.

Edited to add: probably was the wrong time to make my first submission to them.

Agreed. I believe there is a crisis in philosophy or consistency at the present time.

Thanks for the tip. I've got a bunch a nice Indians and several Flyers I was going to send in raw. I think I'll keep them in PGS slabs for a while and wait see if the complaints die down.image

I sent in a KILLER 1919-P cent in for regrading at "64BN" looking for 65+BN. I own many PCGS 65BN cents, including: 1912-P, 1914-S, 1917-P, 1919-S, 1922-D, 1923-P. There MIGHT be one of the 65BN's that is nicer than the 1919-P. They didnt upgraded it.

...it's not like the coin is worth a tone more... maybe $30. I just wanted it in the right grade holder.

This is very similar to the reports that I have been hearing from several freinds of mine who submit continually, they have noticed a sharp tightning of grading at PCGS, especially in the copper and higher grade arena???

I wonder if this has anything to do with the recent change in personnel/ and or a few recent buy back issues ???

I am curious if any body has any comments to why all of a sudden???

Personally, As far as grading goes, I am not that concerned about the tightening, all the coins I have were already in PCGS holders when I bought them and were bought because of the coin itself, not what was on the plastic. If re-submitted, I personaly feel each and every coin I own would come back the same grade or higher in any services holder. (But to be fair, most of my stuff is not in the super high grade category)
