Morgan Dollar Experts ~ Your Opinion Please ~

I received this Morgan Dollar today that I purchased raw on eBay a few nights ago.

As usual luster is much better than what the scan shows.

Please tell me what you think.

Thanks,

Jim

MS65 maybe 66. Thats a really nice looking coin! Looks like very clean fields and no cheek cuts!! image

  • Jim: the obverse looks good.

As I scan the reverse, I see splotchyness, colors bleeding over the rims, the colors of the letters and the insides of the letters look to be the same, and there appear to be some circular patterns where liquid may have pooled. Am I seeing things or is this a pretty good scan of the situation?

  • Very nice coin, I think it would go 65 or 66. Great toning and eye appeal.

The strike is weak & the cheek has lots of small marks & scuffs so I don't see any higher grade than 64. The rev looks like some kind of envelope tone that would probably NG.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Frank,

I removed the coin from the holder and looked at the edges. They appear to be clean.

There is also a gob of luster that shows through the color.

Here are a couple of close up scans.

    Thanks!

    Jim

  • Dog,

I bought it as a MS63 so if it would slab I'd be happy with that..

  • Hey Jim - thanks for the closeups - I see that the toning stops at the rim and that the color inside the denticles appear to be different than the color outside them. Those appear to be good signs, and the coin looks nice too - hopefully the graders won't get cold feet staring at a pretty painted lady - good luck with it!

MS64 for the OBV i am not learned enough to give a grade to the rev due to the toning

It is attractive, but the coin will mostlikey not grade above MS 64. I'm not so sure it is a coin that makes economic sense to slab. The bigger problem may be with the reverse toning and you do run the risk of getting the coin returned in a body bag. I have afew common date toned Morgans that I have just left raw.

  • Thanks to all for you comments.

I'm not really worried about what grade PCGS would give it. I just want it to make it into the slab.

I decided that when I purchase a Morgan I'm going for color, not grade.

I have no intent to sell them in the near future so it really doesn't matter to me if it makes economic sense to slab them.

These will be for my personal collection, and I would like for them all to be in PCGS holders.

    Thanks again,

That's a nice coin, and if you paid 63 money for it you did good. I think it will slab at PCGS. I would grade it as a 64, and that appears to be natural toning to me.

Good luck with the submission... searching for color adds more to the challenge. Please consider posting pictures as you purchase more Morgans.

  • Thanks Coinkat,

Here is one that I was high bidder on in one of the online Heritage auctions.

  • The rub in the upper part of the hair and the weak breast...I don't have my strike guide handy...don't know if 85-Ps are known for weak strikes, so I don't know if you'll get nailed with a 58. The color looks legit to me.
  • I was going to say 63 also. It doesn't appear to have a very strong strike is why I thought 63. Looks pretty clean just a few light marks. Eye appeal is decent so 63 sounds about right. image

    Very nice morgan!!!!

  • The don't like that 81-S as much, sorryimage Appears to have what looks like a fingerprint in front of the nose. Don't know if that is a shadow going across the face or what but it doesn't appear to have a very strong stick and usually you can find 81-S all day long in higher grades with stronger strikes. Personally I really don't care too much for the toning on that one too much.

  • MS 64, from what I can tell. The toning is ok.

I like it alot - but disagree with some of the people who know more than me.

I think weakly struck on obverse but no major nicks/gashes maybe 63.

The reverse looks painted to me.

Buying as a 63, depending on what you paid, you probably got a good deal.
