Calling all VAM experts for help....

Today at the coinshop I ran into this pretty nice 1890S dollar. As I looked it over, I thought the date looked kinda funny. I decided to get it, and upon closer examination, sure enough the 1-9 and 0 of the date showed doubling. I consulted the VAM book and it appears that it's a VAM12 - doubled 1-90. Is this something that VAM enthusiasts look for? Is there a premium on this coin? Bytheway, it's an MS64.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The Van Allen & Mallis Book lists VAM 12 as an R-4. I do not believe this is one that is popular among collectors just yet. If you bought raw and plan to submit the coin, I think that ANACs may be the only grading service that does all VAMs and not the Top 100 and the more recent listing of an additional 50. Is it worth a premium? It is to somone.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • Thanks Coincat - the coin has already been graded by NGC.

No 90-S VAM is in the Top 100 so it's not worth a large prem.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
