Tone for Thought...

Do u consider brown copper toned? Yes it is patina but isnt that just like toning on silver coins? People that collect copper usually want red coins over brown ones. A brown copper coin may not be as pretty a color as a rainbow toned coin but they are both toning to some degree. Should grading services call the Blast white coins white? MS-65 BW (Blast white)? If u dont think copper turning brown and silver coins turing gold are the same thing then why does the color of colorful toning affect coppers RD-RB-BN grade? if a red copper has blue toning its bn should white silver with blue toning have a designation also? MS-65... DT (dark toning)? BT (blue toning)? BE (blue)?

    I am so confused!

"The silver is mine and the gold is mine,' declares the LORD GOD Almighty."
  • I've said it before and I'll say it again. . . .

I HATE toning on any coin. I prefer my silver nice and shiny and my copper nice and red.

Sounds like ngc. I think ngc did use w for a white coin for awhile.

Yes brn copper is indeed toned just as black silver is toned. Neither is ATTRACTIVE so not valuable nor desirable. To be designated red copper has to be just that, original as struck red.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Just what we need more complication! HA!
Myself, I've been pushing for decimal grading. I can't imagine a grading service that would object to needing to take another peek at coins to decide if the "old" MS-60 should now be a MS-60.4 or whatever. Because I'm not into hair splitting, I wouldn't want to see MS-60.45.

You comments about toning on copper coins are very interesting. I've been fortunate to see some amazing colors on Large cents. I love those irridescent olive green colors mixed with glossy medium tan. My favorites are the matte proof Lincolns. Now and then you'll find one with an amazing mixture of pinks and greens that goes great with the walnut brown. Wonderful coins and yet the technical grade might only be 63.

Thanks for bringing up this topic.

    Best,
    Tom
