Question About Submitting Franklins

I am just full of questions lately. Sorry...

When submitting a Franklin to PCGS do you have to state you want them to look for FBL's or do they do that automatically. If they are there do they put that on the label? If you do have to say it on the submit form where would that be.

Thanks again for the help. I am learning a lot.

They will grade the coin with the correct designation (FBL) if present regardless of what coin # you write in.

You can write in the FBL coin # and if it's there, you'll get it and it it's not you won't.

  • Lori,

Hi, where do I begin? I understand from your posts, that you have inherited a coin collection, and hence are trying to put a dollar value to it. Am I correct so far?

If this is the case and I were you, I would sit tight and not move on anything. I would Buy books, get free appraisels if you can and ask all the questions that you can.

Submitting coins for third party grading is not always the best thing to do in all situations. Third party submissions can cost you tons and when you average low grade coins and boddybagged coins, the fees can go long and the value of the coin drops short.

Now if you have some beauties, and you intend on keeping them, or selling them as high grade coins. that is a different case.

I would hate to see you squander the value of your coins on third party fees.

Take a deep breath, learn, learn, learn and then do your homework. Lots of skunks out there that would be glad to take advantage of you.

Ok here is where you send those Franklins to.........just kidding

  • Sorry but you were wrong. I did not inherit any coins. I am new to coin collecting and buy mostly 1964 and under proof sets and would like to submit when I have a nice one. I have done one Franklin 1963 that had the most beautiful pink toning on the back of the coin. It came back PR67. I love it. I just didn't know if I needed to put on the submitting form FBL or not for them to grade it that way.

So thanks to all for helping a newbie with all her questions.

PS. For other proofs in the 80's and 90's how do you get the coins out of the black part once you open the proof box plastic. I smugged a nice cameo Kennedy trying to get it out.
  • Lori:

Rule 1 - Franklin fans can ask as many questions as they want image

Rule 2 - Proof Franklins do not get the FBL designation, because it is thought that all proof Franklins should have FBL's due to the striking process, even though this isn't 100% always the case.
