SLAB IT, SELL IT, OR FAHGETABOUTIT???

Good day all,

The pics inserted show an error quarter I found in a FED wrapped BU roll, I believe it to be a filled die error, and, based on the reverse words, "LOUISIANA PURCHASE", a possible DD? I found another one just like it in the same roll and sold it on Ebay for 142.50. What would be your advice for this one? Would you recommend selling it, i.e., get money for it now because it's not that special...or....slabbing it and saving, or FAHGETABOUTIT :-).....i.e., it doesn't matter. Just wondering what others may think. Thanks for any comment.

if you can get 100 bucks for it i'd say sell it!!! remember when the Type 2 rev. were found on pennies they were getting 50 bucks a peace for them now you can buy one for 5-10.

If someone brought one of these on eBay I'd say give it a shot selling it raw with a good picture on eBay. You could always point out the last one sold for $142.50.

    Two things...

First, because of the method used to mint statehood quarters, a doubled die is out. There is no chance your coin is a doubled die. Not a single case of a statehood quarter doubled die has ever been confirmed by any expert, and they all agree that it's not possible with the single squeeze die making technique employed on the modern coins (post 1997).

Secondly, your coin is a rather extreme example of a grease filled die error and in my opinion is worthy of a slab - an NGC slab that explains the error. Although PCGS is well known for being the best for date and mint slabbing for series and type collectors, NGC is the best for errors, and is the most widely accepted for errors within the error/variety market. They will slab the coin (most likely) as an MS63-MS65 "mint error - grease filled dies" and you should be able to reap $40-$75 for the coin in a slab. Statehood quarter errors are taking off and busting through the roof these days - unfortunately your error type is common, but the extremity of yours is not common.

I think that find is worth some money to somebody. I'd slab it at NGC or ANACS and sell it.

I'll have to take the sellers word there is very little detail because there is very little light

I wonder how old the seller must be to be using a term like "neat"? image
  • Are you suggesting that he is old, or young? I'm of the unfortunate habit of using that term frequently myself. I'm 42. Do I belong to the juvenile or the geriatic set?
