  • He looks like a very astute collector. Go for the gold!!!! Or a silver eagle from his birth year. If you cant afford it, get him a toy that develops his Mind.
Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.
  • How about one of those West Point commems? It has the sword and helmet on it as well as the soldiers. He might think thats cool. It also seems like my boys (5 and 8) love anything that comes in a velvet box or case like that. Not sure how much those are though ($25?)

Tell him happy birthday for us. image

A good way to start him off would be with an 1/10th oz. American Vistas platinum coin or
would you believe I would say this. A nicely toned MS66 Merc from the later short set.

    Good luck,
    Brian.

    Excellent idea also!

  • Its really up to you, however, I just started off my 7 year old the hands on way (same way I started way back when). I purchased him a Dansco album for the circulated statehoods. This way he will be able to complete his first set directly from circulated coinage. Plus its tons of fun watching their eyes light up when they find a missing piece in pocket change (or in daddy's pocket change as the case may be). Once he completes his first album, I am sure he will feel overwhelmingly rewarded and want to move on to bigger and better things.

If you want to splurge, how about a nice sharp AU 55/58 Liberty $5 - should go $150 or thereabouts, maybe a bit less.

My 11 year old surfs e-bay and continually asks "Dad how much is a PR67 1960 Franklin worth?" He want's to build a type set, and buying one of my extras (at a nice price) is not nearly as exciting as e-bay or Heritage.

Silver Proof Set? I've seen the plasic casing and insert in the trash at the video arcade.

Looks like he's already got the castle, what more does he need? Seriously though, when I was his age(I started collecting when I was six) I though any coin from the 1800's was really neat. How about a nice piece of classic coinage, i.e. Seated, Large Cent or a Morgan?

Fifth birthday. Let's see, that would mean he was born in 1998. So, how about a 1998 five dollar Gold Eagle for his fifth birthday.

That's a great idea Russ, I second this one.

One of my coolest coins is only worth about $10

It is a 1982 George Washington proof 90% silver commemorative half dollar.

It is in this purple colored box from the mint, has a card describing it, is encased (just the coin) so can hold it but not really hurt it, is ungraded professionally but I would put it a PR69 DCAM or maybe 70.

The DCAM makes the obverse unreal with Washington sitting on his horse. Until I got this coin, I really did not know the mint could make such cool coins.

If you decide on something besides a coin, you can always go with a bike or train set.

Hey Goose, get him a 1998 Silver Proof Set. This is the last year of the regular 25 Cent reverse, and the coins are very nice!

Either that or a 1798 copper.

Get him a Morgan. My nephew likes them.

I see Gold and Platinum Eagles plastered all over his face. I also see a bag of M&M's somewhere in there for the fun part of his party.

  • I'd suggest you get him started with statehood quarters. They're inexpensive ( 5 yr. olds have been known to misplace things!), available in mom and dad's pocket change, loaded with history lessons and very attractive. Twowood

I agree...a really sharp blazing Morgan. Or maybe. if he's more advanced as he sounds, go for one of the more common date GSA CC Morgans you can find on ebay or Yahoo...great historical coin with a good story behind it. And what real coin collector wouldn't like a CC Morgan ??

  • Goose,

For my son Marks sixth birthday I bought him a big bag of circulated wheat cents and a couple of Whitman albums. He would spend hours going through them and filling the open slots in his new albums. He just turned twelve and he still enjoys looking through large penny hoards that other people give him trying to fill those remaining empty slots.

    Hapy Birthday little goose

If he doesn't already have a 1998 proof set, I agree with the West Point. He can put in the castle as the kings treasure.

Goose3, I think there's a tendency to think about what we like instead of what a five-year-old will like. He might like an old circulated coin and think it's the coolest thing in the world. Kids like to touch things. I recommend something he can hold without it mattering.

    some excellent suggestions. Thanks!

I think what I'll do is let him pick something out that he likes. He really likes to sit in a chair and dig through the local dealer's bargain bin. It has a WIDE variety of coinage in it!!!!

And I may just pick up a decent seated dollar for the dansco while I'm there!!
