Thanks for the information. Would you have the numbers for past years? I feel that there were lots more graded 67 in the past? Do you think that is true?
Thanks fantasiize, it really was a tough year to make a 67 business strike Ike. Only 5 or 6 for entire year. About twice as many were graded 67 in each of previous 5 or 6 years that you gave stats on (if I did the math correctly). Bet the numbers of 64s and 65s really swelled. If I had pop reports for last 10 years or so I'd like to do some kind of table showing total number of Ikes graded and grades assigned. Think would really tell a story of grade tightening. FYI I submitted at least 200 business strike Ikes this past year with 0 67s.
OCT 1998 - total Ikes graded - 17,370 JAN 2000 - total Ikes graded - 21,970 25.4% increase in Ikes graded, 69.2% increase in MS67 Ikes graded from the previous year and 3 months JAN 2001 - total Ikes graded - 26,251 20.5% increase in Ikes graded, 20.5% increase in MS67 Ikes graded from the previous year JAN 2002 - total Ikes graded - 30,763 17.2% increase in Ikes graded, 20.8% increase in MS67 Ikes graded from the previous year JAN 2003 - don't know how many are graded BUT 7.8% increase in MS67 Ikes graded from the previous year
Using the numbers I was given, and rounding off, here is what I came up with: 2300 business strike Ikes graded in 98, 9 made 67; 2300 graded in 99, 9 made 67; 4280 graded in 2000, 9 made 67; 4500 graded in 2001, 11 made 67, ???? graded in 2002, 5 made 67. It's obvious, submissions are up, grades are down. Point is made.
My quick (and easy) conclusions: 1. MS67 clad Ikes are hard to make (less than 0.19%, using 69 out of about at least 35,000 estimate graded) 2. MS67 early year (71 - 74) p mint clad Ikes are nearly impossible as there are none graded (and I have many times jokingly said that I am always looking for a 72p T2 in MS67) 3. the "screws may be tightened" with PCGS (less than 8% graded in the past year, which is the worst year to date) OR quality material not readily available
That's all for now, will also look at the numbers a little more myself.
The Ike collectors club was organized and operated by The Kennedy Center briefly during the early 90's. There was a small but entertaining newsletter issued for a year or two before they quit because there weren't many members and it wasn't growing.
Cladking-about a year ago a group of Ike enthusiasists from these boards were discussing starting a club or having a website? I think they decided on something like the "I like Ike" club? Did anything ever come of that?
I have most of those newsletters still....hidden away somewhere. Jim Barlow did a real good job with it. He still sells Ikes/Kennedy's I think...Braddick has had some dealings with him recently I'm sure.
Just to let you know: I bought many coins of my raw set of Kennedy's thru Jim...good guy.
jom
PS: I tried to find some old PCGS data to no avail...I thought maybe there was some info in the old KICS newsletter...nope.
