I hate to say it, but if that's what your selling to live off of, I don't hold much hope for you making it past the weekend.

I put the bid up so at least you'll get your cost back (and with the cheap weasels on eBay sometimes that's a good thing).

Good luck with your job hunt. Remember, you were looking for a job when you found that one.

Sorry to hear about the job situation, and best of luck in finding something quickly. What kind of work do you do?

I can't really use any of the coins you listed, but I'll be watching the B/S/T board in case you decide to part with other stuff.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Man, that sucks. Hope you find something quick. Good luck.

  • Okay...okay.... It's not all that bad, I'm probably feeling more sorry for myself than anything. A few months ago I was out of work for the first time in 16 years but to have the same type of thing happen twice in 12 months... Ouch!

I have done computer work for about 10 years (Computer Tech/Server/mainframe) and between the economy and the lack of computer jobs... times are tough.

Come Monday... I'm going to go nuts! image I hated being out of work the first time, hopefully the second time will not be as long as the first.

Hey Dakra, I know where you coming from. I have been out of work for the last 6 months (thank God, George W. signed the extention). The job market here in the Chicago area sucks. But I have been practicing "Would you like fries with that!!"

It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Edited - Marty, you have no worries. You've got your $100k quarter to fall back on.

I'm sorry to hear about that. I was laid off a few weeks after 911 and was out of work for 7 weeks before I found something. It is hard, but you'll persevere. Use this time wisely. Work on new things, gain a few extra skills (in our field, that's always a big thing) and remember:

You have more time and energy to find a new job than someone who is sitting in an office half-looking for one. You'll beat them to it.

  • Dave,

First it's not the end of the world. When you find new work you will most likely realize your old job sucked anyway, funny how that works!!

Second, post your occupation so maybe someone here knows someone type of thing. Unless you are a lawyer or coin dealer! image

Enjoy this quality time with your kid, can never get too much of that!

Dakra: Send me your resume' (oreville@yahoo.com) or by PM....

I will get to work on it right away if you would like. I am not a head hunter but a CPA who may have clients or friends who need help.

Tell me how far you normally travel work wise.

In the meantime, perhaps you could do some programming work for some of our illustrious coin dealers around NY City and NEW JERSEY for some real pocket change (certainly a NICKEL I have in mind for you) while keeping yourself in the hunt? image

Sorry to hear about your situation. Unfortunately there are a lot of horror stories out there. My brother (VP of a California Bank) lost his job after 30 years in the banking industry. The bank he worked for0merged with another and he was out of a job. After 5 months of unemployment it took a job selling cars to support his wife and four children.

Another friend in the IT field making six figures lost his job right after 9/11 and just can't find work in the NY area. He is now managing a collection company.

I think we're going to see a turn around this year but it's probably going to be a slow recovery. Keep the faith.

  • From one geek named Dave to another:

Hang in there buddy...I've made a pretty decent go of it as an independent since being laid off from BellSouth over a year ago. I was doing high-level design and engineering, which I have replaced with low-level networking and support, but the "Mom and Pop" market is there, and its going strong. If you can find enough to keep you busy, and keep you in coins, you'll be able to set your own price and spend more time with your son...which is FAR more rewarding than any job, and far more valuable than any paycheck or....dare I say it?....any coin!

Best of luck, and keep the faith. Users will still drive you crazy at the next one image

  • Wow... I really appreciate the words of support and well wishes. I only meant to vent to myself... or atleast outloud a bit image This was probably the wrong place to do it but I appreciate your well wishes. I also appreciate the bids on my auction... although it was not neccesary, now I feel like I am just another "Deb" with a story image I will get by and I will find another job... with the economy as it is, with the tech market the way it is... I should have expected this type of situation. A year and a half ago I was a Management Supervisor in the Technical Support area and they outsourced their Technical Support, I got married, bought a house, a son was born, I lost my mom two months ago and now for my job to be "eliminated".... it's like a bad dream.

The last time I lost a job I told my wife that I would start to sell off my collection...she was adamantly against it because it was something I enjoyed. I never did sell them but at this point, I would rather be liquid than non-liquid. Although I probably won't get rid of everything, I do want that little extra "just in case" money. My son's birthday is in a month and I still want to have a Lincoln Memorial/Wheat Collection to hang on his wall or atleast an "in progress" one image

Again, I appreciate all the well wishes. You guys have taught me a great deal since I started posting in September and I certainly hope when I get to know the hobby well enough, I can add more to this forum in the future.

  • "Would you like fries with that!!"

I considered that the last time I was out of work but my wife wouldn't like it because I would probably tell all the female customers....

"Would you like fries with your shake?"

    okay...bad joke!

    darka,

Sorry to hear about you getting laid off. Myself, I haven't been able to find a job. I graduated 3 years ago, didn't receive any offers, so went back to grad school. Now that I am almost done with my Master's thesis, I find the economy pretty tough. I have been looking for work for 6+ months, and haven't received one call back yet. But we just need to hang in there, and we'll make it. Myself, I am a geologist.

It happened to me in 2001, but I found a better job after 3 months. You just have to see to the other side of it.

    Dave;

Hang in there, It can be worse. My father-in-law died in November of 2000. I was phoned at home the morning of my Mother-in-law's funeral in January of 2001. I was still unemployed when 9/11 occured. And when my father died that October. I did land a job shortly after his passing. Eight dollars an hour trying to sell computers to consumers.

Today, I am happy to report that even after a prolonged period of unemployment We have our house our car and each other. No one starved, and today I collect coins like I dreamed about when I was a kid.

The point...You will survive, the Lord will provide.
