the ability to look at your collection when ever you want to is dissapearing at least as far as 3 to

When i was a kid i kept my collection in a dresser drawer in a cigar box, whenever i wanted to look at my collection, all i had to do was go to my room. Now that all my coins are to valuable and the times we live in are not like when we left are windows open and a key under the mat to the front door, people either have to buy expensive safes and home security systems or leave there collections in safe deposit boxes at there banks. I wish there was a reasonble allternative so i could see my collection whenever i wanted to. I remember seeing a reward being offered in a private add in coin world by a guy who said an old 1804 bust dollar in very poor shape had been stolen from his house and was offeing a no questions asked reward for its safe return, every time i think about brining back home my collection from the bank, i think about that add and leave my coins in the lonely dark bank vault (sob)
The President claims he didn't lie about taxes for those earning less then $250,000 a year with public mandated health insurance yet his own justice department has said they will use the right of the government to tax when the states appeals go to court.

  • i leave all of my coins right on top of my computer desk, i don't fret the boogie man
  • barberlover -- I sympathize. It seems that as time goes by, my 'threshold' for leaving coins at home goes down. Really only the cheap stuff is there!

I can look at my coins all the time without leaving my computer.

I make my collection look pretty inconspicuous. Hopefully it wouldn't draw attention from a burglar. However, no matter where you live the odds on any given event are always in your favor to not be burglarized.
  • I wish I had that problem..... Mine could be mistaken as chump change. LOL

Yeah, I used to use that rationalization myself. Until I got hit twice in under two months - and the alarm system didn't even slow them down.

Try a virtual collection. I find myself looking at my nice enlarged scans on my computer hard drive more than the coins themselves. However, that doesnt always sate my coin lust. Nothing beats pulling out the Dansco set, sitting in a room full of soft indirect sunlight and letting My VF-XF Barber set come to life. My collection is in the 10K range and I have them insured, so I guess it is a chance I take leaving them at home.

I do have a very safe place I hide them within the house, and my greatest fear isn't theft, but fire. I sympathize completely, as it seems a tragedy to have beautiful coins locked away out of site.

I keep paring down my collection and just keeping the truly exceptional coins so that the dollar value of my collection doesn't get too high. I still have the scans of the coins I have sold on my computer and backed up on disk to enjoy at any time.

I use a video camera to make "'movies" of my coins, and I have made computer scans of some of the more recent additions at 425 dpi. One day I will have to get a digital camera and take it to the bank to photograph those coins in the safety deposit box.

  • i plan on getting a fireproof gun safe for my birthday, bolting the puppy to my floor, and just waiting to see if anyone can get inside or take it off.

I keep almost everything in safety deposit boxes. I do keep my "from circulation" sets
in the house and enjoy looking at them.

And for insurance purposes and the purpose of being able to lock the coins away but still be able to look at them, consider having someone photograph the coins profesionally so you will still have the pleasure of being able to look at the collection without having it there. Aren't three to five figure coins worth it?

  • I keep all my 3 and 4 figure coins in my computer room, right on the table beside my desk.

Now, by 3 and 4 figure, do we mean $1.59 and 32.99? image

Why hire someone to photograph them when digital cameras are so cheap. Take as many pictures as you'd like, print them on the new cheap color printers and store the images on your computer. No need to hire someone.

Because often times people don't have the time to invest or the knowledge of how to set up a proper lighting structure, nor do they have the proper software or maqgnification devices required for the best quality photographs. Sure, if you like shots that look like they came from a $100 digital camera taken under a typical incandescant light bulb, go ahead. Some people want better quality and are willing to pay those with the practice for it..
