Does anyone have a Closeup of a PCGS MS67 1971 S Ike?

I am having a little trouble with which coins I should send in. It is a little hard on this date because they are weakly struck in 1971 and some of 1972. Also, if you have a closeup example of 1971-P 1971-D in MS66 would help. Thanks in advance.

  • I don't know if I have any photos that will help you, but as you know those dates are actually a different design, so some of what appears to be a weak strike may just be the low-relief.

Still, to get a 71-S in MS67 will likely require a crisp strike. In particular look for well-defined hair on the obverse and eagle feathers on the reverse. If you have a bunch of 71-S available there should be a couple that stand out. They usually give a 71-S a little bit of slack on marks compared to easier dates.

The 71-D are relatively easy to find clean but again in MS66 will require a crisp strike which can be tough.

The 71-P and 72-P are terrible to find nice (strike or marks), but they'll (usually) cut these dates some slack. The 72-P Type 1 (low-relief) is not distinguished from the later high-reliefs so they are graded by a tougher standard than they might be if separated.

Keep in mind that you don't have to hit the big money grade to at least get your money back. A 71-S in MS66 will at least pay for itself, and a 71-P or 72-P in MS65 is a nice score.

Temper all the above with the fact that I haven't submitted any coins lately so my experience is dated. Your best bet is probably to put a batch together and give it a shot. Then repeat 100 times to allow for grading variances. image Good luck!

    Matt,

My last 71S came back 66. It was a high-end 65/low-end 66. It was a nice strike, with a few snail tracks in the silver on the obverse (minor). The reverse was 67+. I'll send you a pic, if it'll help you with yours.image I also have a 71P that is a regrade candidate in a 65 holder.

I went to Teletrade to see what they had - if you have an account you can go back more than 60 days.

I went back 960days and got pictures of a few 67 and some 68 in PCGS (most don't have pictures, but it is easy to see the ones that do).

Not giant blow-ups, but I like their photos on the ones pictured. Also a better search than Heritage IMO.
