Intercept shields question

I just read that the Intercept shield holders protect the coin through a sacrificial reaction process, implying that some of the material in the holder is consumed in this irreversible process.
I know it is dependent on how toxic the environment is, but how often shoud the holders be changed out?? What is the estimated lifetime for the reactive material? Has anyone had a holder for a long, long time and the coin inside oxidized/corroded?
