1909 IHC in PCGS MS66RD for $11,500 - What? - Where is Mitch?

OK now that the laughing has died down on the 63 Lincoln, I need to ask what happened on the 1909 IHCs in the just finished Heritage auction.

The first piece went for $1,495 which sounds about right. The second went for $11,500!! What am I missing? This is a common date in a higher pop grade. No magnificant toning that I could see. Did anyone see the piece, or can anyone offer some insight. Whoever the bidders were who were willing to pay that much, why didn't they just bid a little more for the first. I mean if I was standing there thinking I was willing to bid 10K+ for the date and grade, why didn't I try to buy the first for $2,000 or something. Both pieces looked about the same in the scan.

Does anyone know the underbidder? I have a beautiful piece that I could sell for say 10K, if he or she is really disappointed.

In fact, where is Mitch? You know all these characters. Find the underbidder. sell the coin for 10K and I will pay you 2K of it. Same deal for anyone of the boards. You know, I am critical of those who mock high prices as being silly, and yet are not offering any for sale at those prices. Well, I am offering a great piece at under the silly price!!

Greg: I was in the auction room when that Indian went off. Best I could tell and IMHO, the coin may have been viewed by at least (2) bidders as a possible upgrade coin. I simply base that on the lack of hysterical laughter I witnessed for that coin when it sold as compared to other coins during that session, especially the Lincolns that followed. image

I think I know who the underbidder was and I will see if I can confirm my suspicions for you. Wondercoin

  • Lakesammman [who was there] in another thread in the coin forum said that the 1909 MS66 is considered a lock for MS67. Watching on eBay live there was obviously very lively bidding for the coin.

Well, I hope the buyer is correct about the upgrade to 67RD, because that is a lot to pay for an option to try an upgrade.

I know a dealer that "lost" over 14 grand on a potential upgrade. Just part of the business.

Greg: The underbidder told me today the 1909 was a wonderful MS67RD hiding out in an MS66RD holder - hence, the price. image Wondercoin
