Gold tone quarter

Maybe someone could help me with this...I have a 2000 Maryland state quarter that is gold toned. Not sure where I picked it up, but I think someone in my family gave it to my daughter at Christmas one year. I know it is not a particularly special coin, but who produced them? Any background on this? Thanks...

  • It could be gold plated.

It also may have acquired the tone from being in a coin album. I have a few state quarter albums, and all of the coins in them are starting to tone gold.
  • It is definitely gold plated as it has never been in an album. Can just anyone gold plate U.S. currency or would the mint be responsible for doing this?
  • Yep, there are several companies that gold plate coins. And, as far as I know, the mint does NOT sell any gold-plated products.

The gold plating unfortunately doesn't really add much value, as a layer of gold can be as thin as a few molecules, thus giving very little gold weight to the coin.
  • Gold plated. . .I've seens lots of them advertised and just recently while channel surfing, I saw some guy hawking them of one of the home shopping channels. Not sure how anyone else feels about it, but I feel that if you alter a coin after it leaves the US Mint, it's worth ZERO.

i don't agree with that, i think they are worth at least faceimage
  • I probably should have stated it this way - as a collector piece, it's worth nothing. . .but as long as the local bubble gum or soda machine still takes it, I'll agree that it's worth face image
  • I was going through a couple rolls of SACs today (here I go again) and I came across a gold plated SBA ....it was pretty funny...
