Double die?

Hi,

Can somebody please help to understand what double die means.

I keep reading about it. But I don't understand the concept.

Thanks.

Pesoeagle - Take a look at this thread. I went through a rather detailed explanation of the difference between a doubled die (notice "doubled" not "double") and a machine doubled coin in the thread including images. It should give you something to read for a bit, and might completely answer your question. If not, just post again, and I'm sure either I or someone else can come to the rescue.

When dies are made - they are struck more than once. When any shifting occurs, a multiple is made on the die. This die then makes thousands of coins. Can be obverse or reverse. A famous example is 1955 cent.

Machine doubling -> when a coin stays for 2 strikes.

RPM (repunched mintmark) -> multiple strikes putting multiple mintmarks on a die.
