Heritage auction in Florida. . .

What the heck is going on down there? I'm watching indian cent after indian cent sell for many, many, MANY times it red book value? Before that, I watch lots of early cents sell for thousands. It's as if the entire floor is filled with bored billionaires.

And none of them selling were mine!!! image
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • I agree....It is amazing....I just saw an 09 Indian get 57 bids and go f04 $3500 or so...Should have gone at $1500 or so.

Gates and Ellison must have taken up collecting!?!?

    Welcome to the boards Draco.

The value of these coins is HIGHLY dependent on the exact grade. Redbook lists prices for MS60 coins. I haven't looked at the specific auctions, but common date indians in MS65 RED sell for $300+ even though Redbook lists them at $25. COins in super grades like MS66 RED or MS67 RED are going to sell at levels way higher than this.

If you'd like I can send you an old "Grey Sheet" price guide that will be very educational.

    $7,500 on a 1909-s 65rd ihc image
  • Yeah well a very common date PCGS MS66 1909 Indian Head Cent just went for over 11K including the juice. That is crazy. It was in an old rattler and I guess a couple people must think its going to upgrade. A low end MS 66 1909 should start in the $800. range.

Plain old common 65s like a 1907 went for 20% over pinksheet [Eagle Eye priceguide].

    Draco,
I PM'd you back. Don't know if it will go through where your PM is not turned on. Select profile near the upper right, then turn on allow private messages. The little lock symbol will show up on the top right of your posts.

It's simple really, whats hot brings in money from people chasing whats hot, even if it's above bid on a common coin in a hot series, can anyone say a m.s. 1909 p - 66 red indian is rare or even scarce or how about a 37 proof buffalo nickle graded as high as 67. When you want to buy a coin that is hot, you might get a better deal from a dealer than bidding against the mass of i want whats hot crowd. I know this is true because i have purchased coins recently in hot areas if they were in series i liked anyway from dealers at much lower prices than i would pay for the same coins at auction.

Consensus is the 1909 is a lock 67 - there were still 5 bidders at $8,000!! It really was a beautiful coin. After seeing "none-finer" coins going for monster money, several bidders were ready to take the risk of the upgrade.....image
