Cherrypicking, magnification question.

I thought I read that if you can't see something with 7 power magnification that it isn't significant. Does that mean that if you see something with say 10 or 15 power it would not be considered as a variety. I was wondering what sort of magnification coppercoins pictures of that 1970s would have been. I have a few 70s coins that you can see something barely with 10 power but under 20x it looks like awesome doubling. Any thoughts or help appreciated.

    1. The generally accepted magnification for identification of doubled dies and mint mark varieties is 16X. Another rule of thumb is that it must be photographable without question as to what it is under 30X or it's not collectible. This is the standard first set forth by SDDCA in the early 1990's, then carried through by NCADD and coppercoins.

    2. The magnification I use to take images of die varieties is typically between 20X and 30X, although for markers I might go all the way to 35.5X. I still use between 15X and 20X for "searching" at home, and I use a 16X ANCO loupe (available for $10) at shows.

    3. 1970 cents are very notorious for machine doubling, so be careful. Machine doubling will have a flattened appearance, which true hub doubling will have a rounded, "relief" appearance.

Back in my cherrypickin days I used a 30X Panasonic light scope. Found lots of rpms, omms, & doubled dies at coin shops and shows.
