Found this Washington quarter today

I was looking through a bunch of quarters today and found this one. It's a 1936-P with part of the date covered up with what appears to be a cud, but take a look at the stuff to the left of the date along the rim. The rim has not been damaged and the reeding is good and the reverse opposite the date doesn't show any damage or weakness (other than the obvious wear). Any ideas?

Thanks,
Bill

I'll just say right off the bat I have no clue, but it's very interesting looking.

I can't figure out why the apparent cud on the date hasn't been worn flat (it looks like it's sitting higher than the date) especially on an AG coin. I first thought that the apparent cud was damage which pushed metal up over the date long after it was struck, but the rim isn't damaged. The whole rim from about 2 o'clock to 7 o'clock looks abnormally wide, which I suspect is related to what is going on.

The area to the left of the date is very odd. That area of strangeness is approximately the size of the apparent cud. Maybe it was struck through something, but I can't figure out why there is still (some type of) detail in that area at the same time.

So I haven't contributed anything except a bump. image

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

It looks like it has solder on it.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

I thought that it might have been a foreign substance too, but after looking at it with a loupe and a microscope I can't see any evidence of it. The thing that looks like a cud blends into the wider rim on the right.

It was a good solder joint then. Looking at your scan I see what looks like a joint line on the right side where the rim & solder? meet. You need a weight on it then you'll know.

Dog may be right, but it looks like it might be a cud to me. If so, that makes it a pretty neat piece, despite the low grade.
