Tragic but WOW

Yesturday my neighbor across the street was found dead in bed. His father had been a coin collector from the turn of century days, but when he died I had thought his collection was disbursed years ago. Well after the body was removed, his kids started emptying the place. About 75-80 assorted guns were removed, and while I was watching talking to one of the daughters. Then I saw what appeared to be trays coverd and I asked what was inside. She pulled back the cloth on one and I almost ..well ya know. This guy had countless deep cameo proofs from turn of century...barber, theres proof gold...i couldnt believe My eyes...matte lincolns 1910-1916...matte proof buffs...i was astounded.

and no...nada for sale.

Were these coins raw or slabbed?

Goes to show how people keep quiet about there treasures. Especially those that keep them at home.

...just guessing from the info ("covered tray"), they are raw, probably 2x2d. Tragic, but wow.

I hope, for the sake of the family, that they have someone who knows about coins that they can trust. It's a shame when this kind of collection gets sold for far less than it's worth.

It's also sad when someone decides to keep them in the family, only to have them stolen by a family member and sold for far less than they're worth. image

  • If you had a good relationship with your neighbor...you might offer to research and give the family an idea of what they've got. If nothing else...it'll give you a chance to do something nice for the family and allow you to play with some nice new stuff...

I spoke with the eldest sister of the man...real nice lady...she has the fathers late 1800's proofs and said she plans on keeping this stuff as well. The sets were assembled when grading wasnt around....oldest coin in the lot is 49pds franklins...and they called those moderns image

Shouldn't that be ... "youngest coin in the lot?" image
