Slabs are too big.

I think the standard size slab is really too big.Shouldn`t they be made about half the size they are now?
I,ll bet someone was a ton of slabs might agree to welcomeing a smaller slab to help conserve space.
What does everyone think of a mini-slab?

  • Mini-slabs sound great to me! They might also be better for displaying sets. A Lincoln set might not take up a whole dinner table.image

Thats one dinner I,d like to sit down to.:image..Oops.Thats someone elses line.image

But ya,I think a slab could be just as ridgid and strong and be about 1/3 smaller?
Not that I,m on a crusade to miniturize the standard slab size.I just think it would help
slab collectors save some space when storing your coins away.
    Just a thought. image
  • Do you think the size of the ANACS slabs are about right? Twowoodimage

Twowood, I think you hit the nail on the head. The ANACS slabs are a much better size than PCGS or NGC slabs, but I would like to see them incorporate the features of PCGS slabs which permits them to be stacked.

I like the size of ANACS slabs also, But the PCGS blue boxes fit into the bank box just fine!!!

You can always go with ACG. They're the smallest slab on the market... according to their PR.

That's one of the reasons I like ANACS. Keep your attention on the coin, not the window dressing.

The limiting factor for slab-size is the 1915 $50 slugs. The slab has to be big enough to hold those. If you've seen one of these coins in the slab, you'll see that it goes right to the edge. ANACS (and presumably, ACG) slabs are too small for those coins, and so they won't slab them. Not so much of a problem for ANACS, but PCGS and NGC need this size. Of course, this makes stuff like half dimes and S3c get absolutely lost in the slab...

Oh, and ANACS slabs do stack ... just not very well image .

What about different sized slabs? Should a cent slab be smaller than a dollar slab?

PCGS sized slabs fit most peoples hands nicely. I like them just fine. ANACS are nice sized for Dimes, and small cents. I did have a bunch of ANACS Lincolns that I kept in the Eagle brand ANACS 21 coin boxes. They displayed nicely. mdwoods

P.S. I like the Eagle brand notebook holders for PCGS & other slabs. Someone on the forums sells just the Eagle "pages". They hold nine coins per page. You can buy a nice notebook cheap at a Office supply store.

What they really need to do is put the coin information on the top edge of the coin as SEGS does. That would cause me to want to reslab my whole collection.

Which, based on what I have seen, are a tiny minority of the collecting community.

And the majority of the grading community!!!!

You can send all your coins to the coin shrinking guy, then they will fit into tiny tiny slabs!!!

And how big are they in terms of percentage of those who collect coins?
  • CoulportCoulport Posts: 1,087 ✭✭✭
At shows, both large & small, I would venture that well over 75% of the coins on display and those that trade are "raw" coins.

This is true. Harshly cleaned Morgans and Walkers as far as the eye can see. Acres of overgraded copper. Yards of hazed, spotted modern proofs in dust covered 2x2s.
