Newbie On Deck with A Silly Question

As a way of introduction, I began collecting coins as a teenager. My interest waxed and waned over the course of the next couple decades based upon life (some stressful) events. In the last year, my interests were re-vitalized and now I have turned my efforts to slabbed coins (generally modern, although I have attraction also to SLQs and Buffalos). Now my question:

Could some of you experts provide me the answer to a question? While the special mint coins 65-67 are included in the basic proof sets of the Jefferson, Roosevelt, Washington, and Kennedy, why are they not included in the basic proof set of the Lincoln?

The only thing silly about your question is the implied expectation of reasonableness and consistency when applied to the Set Registry. The Registry is strictly a fabrication of PCGS and therefore was not subject to independent review by experts or anyone else. I would suggest that if you want to pursue this further that you send an email to setregistry@collectors.com and ask them. But just remember SMS coins are neither proof nor circulation strikes, they're SMS.

Steve27's suggestion is probably best. But an alternative method of pursuing this question is to put it on the Q/A forum for David Hall to see.

As a Lincoln Proof collector,I to felt it should have been included. No one has given a satisfactory answer, except that as has been pointed out they weren't Proof coins. That really doesn't fly, since they are included in the other sets.
BTW Welcome ! that isn't a "Silly Question"

  • If memory serves me correctly they were included at one time prior to the variety sets. When the variety sets were established the SMS cents were pulled from whart is now the "basic" set. As Merz pointed out, they are not proofs. A interesting inconsistency. Possibly due to more varieities in the cent series (dbl dies, No S, Type I and II etc.)? I know the nickel series only has the 71noS as a variety. Alot of people sent David emails so this may be their way of "giving the collector what they wanted".

    BTW - Welcome aboard

    Folks,

Thanks for your responses (especially you Russ). The answer that they are not proofs still does not explain why they are treated differently among the Lincolns than among the other denominations.

I did post this question twice in the Q & A forum and have not had a response. I guess Newbies have to wait until they earn their wings before they can receive a response. For that reasons, I have turned to the more friendly environment of this forum.
