1975 SSPC why no respect?

I know a little of the story but I was just looking at E-bay and there is a beautiful complete set w/many psa 9s cheap compared to the 75 topps i'm collecting. I looked on the registry and they arent even represented. what gives they look like a nice set?image

Well, I dont think I'll agree with skinny's reply. Its a real nice LARGE set. The cards are nice and well there arent as many as some people would think. Its a set made by a private outfit. I dont know about licenseing, but its a nice set. Most of the cards will be high grade. As they werent distributed like most cards. They came in full series sets.
  • It's a vastly undervalued set IMHO - that's why I've been buying up every set I can find for the past 5 years. And with grading and high grade cards in such demand, I think the set has room to move dramatically. It provides one of the few opportunities for people to build a set in very high grade at a reasonable price level - what would a 1975 Topps PSA 9 set cost? 660 cards at $50/card is $33,000!!
Why do I get the feeling, that some cards are worth money, while others are not?

  • I have been involved with cards and collecting for 15 years or so and I don't seem to be familiar with the set. Can someone please provide a scan or a link?

    Thanks,
    Vic
Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.
  • You might have noticed that I have had a "wanted" spiel in my tag line for quite some some.

I have found that nice clean sets are few and far between and I have not been overly successful in my search. I have only found a couple of NICE ones to date.

As for being unlicensed, I believe that they were, o/w Krause would not list a value to them and Lemke would state that they were not an authorized issue.

I think people are going to find these to be steals at these levels in the future - 600 NM/MT or better cards for $.50/card, including PSA graded cards? The break value is really 10x that amount...this market is an untapped frontier.

People always want to buy Barry Bonds rookies for $.25 after he's hit 73 HRs - well, here's a chance to do it. What would 10 PSA 9 '75T commons cost? Less than this whole set, with 17 STARS in PSA 9?

Wow,that is amazing for $300.How could you go wrong with that deal?
  • tbub- There are a few sets registered under 1975 SSPC. However, I dont believe anyone has over 5% graded yet.

I bought one of these sets about a year ago because Im old enough to remember when they came out, they called it the pure set because is was just the picture with no other distractions. It really created a stir because this was when Topps ruled.

Anyway, its a neat set with a ton of players, but also coaches and more obscure players than were in the Topps set. I sent in what I considered the top 15 stars for grading and received 13 9's. I can only imagine what you could do if you had 10-20 top grade sets to choose from.
  • You guys talked me into it just "bought it now" for $300 17 psa cards mostly 9s +1 10 of the newest HOF catcher plus 600+ more cards that are suppose to be in great shape. The 9's include ryan brett schmidt ,all star cards I wish it was a topps set then i'd have a shot at funky frank, .my hero. Zardoz I read your post earlier about being married w/children when the new HOFers were rookies . I could have been when murray rolled in but it would still be another 18 years before the kids came along. Thanks for your input on the 75's they looked so good, compared to all the dough I've plunked down to sort thru thousands of off centered topps 75 . tough cards to find in quality form image

  • tbub,

you will probably regret that purchase. they are very nice looking cards, but realize that the guys hyping these cards are holding large quantities of them which they would be very happy to sell to you. i think one of them indirectly just sold you a set.

it is my personal opinion that the bulk of these to recently hit the market were not printed in the 1970's.

Skinny may have something there, I remember a few years ago hearing about some reprinted SSPC cards, so be careful.
And I imagine the real ones are licensed to a degree as PSA does grade these, as the prior posts indicate...jay

I own one of these cards - Rose PSA 9 - and I got it for less than 10 bucks. Great looking card and they remind of the 53 Bowman (in a small way) due to no names on the front - the ONLY comparison BTW.

I would like to get a Schmidt PSA 9 and then, who knows. They are affordable cards and nicce looking. Chock full of HOFers ....

Yeah, like Skinny says. I'm sitting on vast quantities, all 3.25 sets!!!!! (yeah, that's a point 25). Nothing like the expertise of an anonymous poster.

There are no reprints on this issue according to the Standard catalogue as SSPC was stopped from doing so.

Hey, I'm collecting them because I like them.

I like 'em too. Too bad the set is so large it eliminates it from my future grading endeavors. I like the sub-100 card sets myself image

There were different years of the SSPC. The Large set you just purchased I believe was printed in late 1975 or early 1976. There legit cards. And a nice set. I saw a PSA 10 Aaron sell for $200.
Zardoz, I'm sitting on a huge quantity too, 9 full or partial sets. Some complete some not. Alot of sets were distributed by the old Renata Gallasso card company , and Capital Cards. Both of Brooklyn NY.

8 years ago I heard that a large quantity of these were a "wharehouse find".
I also heard the rumors that these were reprinted in 1982 using the same plates and inks.
    IMHO I would avoid them.

    Loves me some shiny!
  • The cards were not licensed, SSPC got sued, and agreed not to print any more. Lemke mentions this. I know that some players will not autograph them because they were unlicensed-- I saw Harmon Killebrew decline to sign one about ten years ago, stating that the players did not get paid for the use of their pictures and would not sign those. I too heard there was a reprinted set, although never anything relly tangible.

    Agreed....cannot blame them though.

I bet if you offered to PAY for the Auto, he would! - I have never heard of Killebrew refusing to sign for $$.

    I like these cards btw.
