1990 Topps Gold Cards

When I was buying 1990 Topps Cards they used to have inserts. You would scratch them off and if you matched three like symbols (can't remember exactly what they were) you could send in and get Topps Gold Cards.

The secret was, if you had a light bulb that is used to scan money in change machines you could hold the card up and see what was beneath the gray covering. So I did it and sent in lots of these cards and received thousands of Topps Gold Cards.

Anyways, are Topps Gold Cards collectible? Worth grading?

  • Actually, it was in 1992. I don't think they are worth much anymore.

Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.
  • They gold cards were getting a slight premium at one time. But now graded gold versions actually get less than the regular cards because people consider them parallel cards and not really part of the set.

If it gives you any idea of what the market is like, I recently won a 92 "Winners" Gold set for $8.00. The only reason I bought it was that I was buying some other cards, and figured that I'd save on shipping if I added it in (the rest of the cards would have cost 7 to ship, 10 for the cards and the set) and I didn't have a 92 set (trying to make a complete run of sets to 1975), so it was worth the $11.00 agregate (set + difference in shipping).
