ICG & Morgan Grading

Given what I have seen with regards to ICG and their grading, how does anyone feel about how they grade Morgans? Obviously I buy the coin and not the holder but there is also the issue of trust.

They're better on classics than modern coins- a lot of well graded morgans have been shown on this forum from ICG... my guess is that they aren't all that bad, but I will allow someone who has some ICG morgans to tell me if I'm correct.

  • I have several morgans in icg slabs and have had pretty good luck with them crossing .. 5 of 7 that I've submitted. Love the holders, but they are too hard to sell with icg's rep on moderns

    Got Morgan?

The last two Morgans I have had have been overgraded in my opinion. One was a 1902-O ICG MS65, which wouldn't have made 65 at PCGS or NGC. The other one was a 1889 ICG MS64 which had a scratch on the reverse that I think PCGS or NGC would have bodybagged. I avoid ICG Morgans.

I own several Morgans in ICG holders. They are all beautifully toned coins, that were bought for there toning not there holder.I know I can get my money back and more on some of these coins. If you pick out nice coins they speak for themselves. You do not have to do any selling on them when the time comes to move them.

Thats my 100 cents worth on this.
  • I have 9 Morgans in ICG MS-64 slabs (all eBay purchases) and all appear to be accurately graded. I would not take the risk on a higher grade coin without seeing it in person.
  • I would like to start collecting Morgans and have been watching several on eBay that have been graded by ICG.

    How does this one look?

Not bad, but I would not buy any coin with out a return privilage. That wat you are protected. Pictures sometimes do not do it all.

    TONEDDOLLARS,

I agree 100% and would NEVER buy a coin on eBay without a return privilage.

    Thanks,

ICG is fine on Morgans. Most of the ones I crossed did so at the assigned grade or one higher.

You guys must have got different ICG Morgans than what I did. I was not satisfied with any I had, and I got rid of them like a hot potatoe. I'm sure there are some that are accurately graded, but the problem is, what happens when you go to sell or trade them? Looks to me like they are averaging about 55% of PCGS prices. Of course, if you do get some that cross then you are in good shape considering the prices.

Well, as long as you know the score you may be able to do well if you can find nice ones. ANACS Morgans are the same, and I have really done well on them. I just have a hard time with ICG because I really got burned on the 1902-O ICG MS65 which was barely a 64.
