Ever had PCGS upgrade a crossover??

Have you ever had PCGS upgrade a crossover you submitted in the slab at "cross at any grade"? I haven't, just wondered if anyone else had. Thanks, CCG

This one and only this one. Was not sent in at the cross at any grade but as cross at same or higher. Was in a NGC MS63 slab with no FB designation. Came back from PCGS as a MS64 FB coin which I believe is correct and just for the coin. Totally original and that is why I believe PCGS liked the coin. Have had a few cross at the same grade but this is the only one to go higher. Do Not play that game any longer though.

I had an 1886 Liberty Nickel in a NGC MS63 holder that crossed to a PCGS MS64. The coin was high-end and deserved the higher grade.

  • Yes, I've had several. There's no reason it would be easy to get an upgrade, as I've found the grading services grade similarly - PCGS, NGC, ICG, ANACS, PCI. On average, I've found differences in grading appear over time, not between the services at any given moment. I'm not referring to submitting a single coin, but an invoice of coins - they'll tend to grade them similarly. Of course, we want them in PCGS holders, since they bring the most money, therefore the crossover attempts.

My first submission as a "member", 2 of the 4 coins I submitted upgraded. One went from XF45 to AU50, the other went from MS63 to MS63FB.
  • So once you became a member they decided to give you the grade it deserved?

No. It was like a first taste of drugs. They lured me in the first try and them made me pay over and over and over and over after that.

  • I just got one. An NGC 1920 Lincoln in an NGC 64RD to PCGS 65RD. The catch is that I cracked it out.

Clackamas.. that wasnt the question. It was whether it crossed over at the higher grade.

Just once for me as well. This was a beautiful PL coin in an ANACS 60 holder that crossed to a 61 in PCGS. The PL qualities is what pushed it to a higher grade.

  • do pedigreed coins crossover at the same grade on a more consistent basis?

I had an early Commemorative go from a PCI VF30 to a PCGS XF45. Funny deal is I'd have prefered it go the other way.

I can't get anything to happen, good or bad. I sent in a 1906 Indian, NGC 65RD, cross at any grade. I received the e-mail notice my coin had shipped, so I checked the invoice, and it has DNC. Is this common? Guess I will have to crack it out and try again.

  • i'ved crossed dozens and dozens of ngc's early cameo holdered 1950 to 63 (mainly on halves and quarters) before pcgs started cameoing upped to dcam's and have had several make a point better and
    a handful 2 points + dcam
so....that negates the notion pcgs coins are somehow "better graded" than ngc coins, especially on cameo proofs 50-70. i think both services do try to be fair in general
but then again pcgs has to,by force of it's years of claiming to be "the best" ie,"worth more" have
a much less cross rate just for the appearance sakes of the "we're better" than they notion
    IMHO

When you get it back it should have a tag with the reason.

I have had several coins in NCG slabs crossover at a higher grade.

    Vancouver Half MS64 to MS65
Sesquicentennial Half MS63 to MS 64
    Connecticut Half MS64 to MS65
Columbia SC Half MSa65 to MS66
New Rochelle Half MS64 to MS65

regarding your next move. i refer you to my previous post about pcgs wont cross most just for the appearance of "we are better than they" factor. if your are a good grader, crack it and try most usually go easily and even again i've had em then still go up a grade, when the first thing they would not do was cross it out of the ngc holder attempting to further the planting n the minds of the consumer somehow they (pcgs) are "better" than ngc
not so,it's a head game. they run right neck and neck for the most part.

pcgs's initial marketing ploys beginning with being the first on the scene of the major two has just stuck with most coin buyers over the years since both of them's inception. they both have dogs, they both have some of the finest, they both undergrade and overgrade.

if either of them would keep the same exact team of graders for more than a year or so at the time the consistentsy would be more like i feel my own is with 25 years if rigorous study and refinement which is on the money of what it "should" be, every time.
  • I've had one. 1948 Franklin ms-65 got the fbl in the upgrade. Stayed a 65 though. At least to me getting the FBL was an upgrade.

Hahahahaha, I know, hard to believe, but true! There ARE a few actual decent coins in ACG holders...you just have to find them!

I recall reading a post where the Fonz said that ACG sometimes really screws up and grades a coin properly. There is probably some truth in that statement.... The question is how many coins must one search through to find the few exceptions and how many are willing to do this?

I've upgraded ACG coins before, but I crack them. I wouldn't be insane enough to submit them as a crossover.

Older ACG coins can be found graded correctly or even undergraded. Clad Ikes used to be graded rather strict by ACG in the early days.
