PCGS submission question

I just spen several hours cracking my proof platinum coins out of U.S. Mint plastic capsules and inserting them into 2X2 vinyl holders (tough wearing white gloves) so I could submit them for grading per the submission requirements. Did I do all that for nothing? Will my proofs be "damaged" in the little vinyl holders? I saw a previous post where a member sent his SAE in the mint plastic holder. Thanks...I don't want to do that again if I don't have to.

  • You can send them in the plastic holders from the mint.

They do want you to put the plastic holders in the flips, though.

With my quarterly submission, I'm sending a 1984W Gold $10 in the mint capsule in a 2.5" saflip. I'd recommend something similar. BTW, I'm hoping that coin will go 69DC or 70DC. It's so sharp, reflective, and frosty and no sign of flaw that I could see.

It seems like it is always scary to send stuff to PCGS with fingerprints, etc., but it seems since that issue has been brought to the attention of David Hall, haven't heard too many complaints reimageCGS issued fingerprints.

    Is this the case?

NEVER use vinyl flips for proof coins. They are very prone to causing haze on the coins. Use only mylar, preferably ET Kointainer Saflips. And, as nwcs noted, they should be 2.5 x 2.5.

    Doesn't that mean 67? image

    Probably, but we'll see!
  • Thanks for the help. I'll let you know if I get lucky on the 20 submissions.

Russ, oh Russ, OH RUSS. If only I had read your post, or one like it, a year ago, I wouldn't have ruined a nice mid 50's Frankie Proof by doing just what you say to NEVER do. Well, now I've written down the name of the flips you've referenced and I will be hunting them down at FUN this weekend. Thanks.

I don't send that many modern commemoratives, but it is nice to know its O.K. to send them in their plastic holder.

pcgs and other places sell saflips but be sure you specify saflips and the package says saflips!

    Greg,

I wish it was only one coin I ruined before Supercoin stepped in and showed me the light. I toasted a bunch when I first started submitting.
