  • Murray - Lock
    Sandberg - Good chance
    Carter - Good chance

Cant see Smith before Gossage or Sutter, especially as a first ballot honoree.

Should be interesting. Is that announced in the morning or afternoon?

Murray will definitely get in. Carter should get in this year. I think Sandberg will get in -- just not yet. It would be nice to see someone like Goose Gossage get in this year. I certainly believe he deserves to be in by now.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Murray - definite
Gary Carter - this is probably his year to go in
    Lee Smith - someday
Ryne Sandberg - yes, should go this year

You know you feel old when players going into the Hall are players you collected as a kid.

  • Murray- Definite lock (one of the most underrated power hitters in history)
    Carter - probably in
Sandberg - should make it in this year
Lee Smith - not before Goose or Sutter

It's always interesting to see how the votes get split behind an obvious candidate like Murray. Can't wait!

  • MickeyC...You know you feel old when players going into the Hall are players you collected as a kid.

You'll really feel old when the players going into the Hall are players that played AFTER you STOPPED collecting!! I was already in college by the time every one of these guys up for discussion broke in.
  • Thanks TG for futher depressing me!

I didn't think of that fact until after you brought it up. I was already married with kids and a crippling mortgage when the oldest of those players was a rookie.

    I'm going off to sulk

  • Murray and Carter. Both deserve it.

Poor Ryno. Very surprising that Sutter got so many votes and Ryno got only 49%. I thought he'd be higher.

Next year looks like it may just be Paul Molitor, possibly Eckersley. The holdovers may not have the momentum that Carter had in the past few years to even come close.

Murray, a member of the 3,000-hit and 500-home run clubs, became the 38th player elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, after being named on 85% of the ballots Tuesday. Carter, in his sixth year on the ballot, received 78% of the vote, with 75% required for election.

  • Uhhhh, Neil, I've got a couple of questions for you:

    1) Where will the S&P 500 Index be by the end of this year?
    2) What are your favorite lottery numbers?

  • Neil,
Congrats my friend in your life long devotion to the collecting of Gary Carter. "The Kid" has been a real ambassador to the game and charitable causes post playing days and is very deserving when compared to recent catcher inductions. I know your a real happy camper today!
Keep up the good work on that player set!

  • Nobody mentions Alan Trammell any more. If Ozzie was such a lock, why shouldn't Alan? Their fielding percentages are nearly identicle, and Trammell had a better bat. Wussupwithat?

Oh, and Rob E, who's that hottie in your space?

  • Hi Guys, Thanks for the congrats on my Gary Carter collection. I was saying that he deserved to be in for forever. So many dealers laughed at me and told me to keep dreaming. Those same dealers said to buy Gooden and Strawberry rookies instead of Carter cards. Who's laughing now. I currently have over 1,000 different items in my Gary Carter collection. I have met Gary Carter five times and each time was more special then the next. I have even told him about my collection. He told me my collection was the biggest that he has heard of next to his own. But an even bigger thrill then having such a great collection was the last time I saw him at a show here in New Jersey signing autographs. I brought my oldest son with me to meet him. As the last guy in front of us on the line moved to the side, Gary stood up, reached out his hand and say "Hello Mr. Downey, how are you today". My son was in shock. He was so proud that a real baseball player knew who his dad was. Truth be told, I was shocked that he remembered me too. What I great player and person. Gary really is a hall of famer. Neil B. • Neil,

Great story. That just reinforces the decision for election to the HOF. What a great guy. Thanks for that.

    Neil,

Carter is truly a class act. I was at a card show in North Jersey back in the late 80's when Carter and Winfield were signing autographs. The line was out the door and a 10 year old kid was telling Gary about a ballgame that him and his dad went to when Carter had hit a home run. The guy behind him started grumbling and finally said out loud - "Hey, can we move this along???". Gary Carter looked up at the guy and told him - "Hey, I'm talking to my friend Jason right now. When we're finished, you'll be next. But until then - please be patient."

You should have seen that kids face light up - Gary Carter of the New York Mets knew his name...
One humorous note - after the kid moved on - the dealer plunked his box of a dozen balls on the table and Carter asked the crowd "Isn't it a 6 item maximum?". Needless to say - the crowd agreed wholeheartedly and back to the end of the line he had to go in order to get his 2nd 6 signed!image
