OK, I have to gloat for a second. Sorry wondercoin!

A while back, I posted that the #2 set of Buffalos was being auctioned. Somebody asked what the 26-S would go for. I replied:

<< A 26-S in MS64 sold for $17,250 earlier this year. I'd expect it to hit at least $25,000. >>

And then, wondercoin responds:

<< A set like this brings out "diehard" collectors. I would think a nice gem 26(s) would bring closer to $75k than $25k!! Remind me after the auction if I was right or wrong. And, hoepfully, for the consignor's sake, the coins go for "moon money". But, here again, this is a perfect example of the "tiny" "one point jump" in classic coins making the "tiny" 1 point jump in modern coins/prices look like a game of tiddly-winks Wondercoin >>

Final amount with bid-pay?

$25,300

Admittedly, I still find that remarkably cheap for this coin.

  • However, I will admit to being way off here:

    << The 26-D is a $4500 coin in MS65, probably double that in MS66. >>

    $5,796!?!?!

    MastaHanky,

I believe "bp" refers to buyer's premium, which in this case appears to have been 15%. That's pretty high but not as bad as Heritage's 20% which is ridiculous IMO.

Guys: HOLD ON! The coin does not even sell until tonight!! That price was simply the internet bidding closing price. Don't count me out yet! image Wondercoin

Correct. That coin ain't sold yet. They just cut off internet bids so they could get their opening prices printed up in time for the live auction later today.

Wondercoin, the question is: Are you going to bump the price up another $50k to be right? image

The way I've always played the game is "closest without going over". Under those rules, WC would only have to bump it a few grand to get past the buy price of 25K. Unless you're counting the BP as part of the "price".

I'd say that the BP is certainly part of the cost of obtaining the coin, therefore price...and:

This should be interesting. (Target $43,500 +bp) What time does the auction end?
  • prooflikeprooflike Posts: 3,879 ✭✭
Well might as well make it a guessing game contest, I'll say $36,200 with juice.

RC: The auction starts in about 30 minutes. I'll be heading downstairs to enjoy the action. My lots of interest start much later in the sale - I won't be bidding on the 26(s) nickel as it is out of series for me, but, IMHO, it is a very lovely specimen and some lucky collector will have landed a real beauty here image

  • Oh crap, hahaha, you guys were right!

    No more gloating for me.

Now I guess we get to see if I'm publically humliated or not. image

    $103,500.

And, if I had a customer for it, I would have raised my $75k original estimate as this particular coin was a sensational specimen. image Wondercoin

Mitch, What did the 51S PCGS MS68 Roosie go for.

Nick: The 1951(s) Roosie sold for around $4830 (I did not buy it). Nice coin and nice price "appreciation" from the $190 plus commish one sold on Teletrade for a few short years ago image Wondercoin.

  • Now I think I can say contgrats for an awesome sale! Did I understand this correctly, you thought you would get $25k for the '26-S and ended up with a hundred? I have a few buffalos coming but naturally not a '26-S.

What is the most expensive nickel, not including the 1913 Liberty?

WC. You know the market, that's for sure. How 'bout the price on that p8 Roosie? @ market...imho image

Let's face it: the true condition rarities are going up and will continue to go up. the challenge is cypher out which coins those are going to be.
