My PCGS coins - update. BIG KUDOS to PCGS

I submitted several invoices to PCGS and they slowly work their way back to me. First of all I sent this coin for grade review. I sent to PCGS in original, sonically sealed mint capsule but when it came back (PR69DCAM) I noticed spots at 9 and 3 o'clock. I sent it back for grade review with following result: I have the coin back (raw of course), a check from PCGS, and an invoce with two freebies!!!!! WOW, thank you PCGS and esp. Sandy who was a great help. BIG, BIG KUDOS to PCGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Secondly I sucessuly crossed 1913-D type 1 buffalo nickel from PCI MS63 to PCGS MS63. This is a nice coin with a nice light rainbow around the edge.

Both coins will be on sale on ebay soon at 0.01 with no reserve. I will let you know when.

When PCGS wrote you the check was it for the market value or the price you paid. Could be the same, but I am curious.

beautiful nickel, just beautiful. also, nice to hear pcgs stand behind their guarantee, even if it is only a 50% guarantee.

the spots look like the could easily be dipped off (not the nickel...)

Good to hear it, nice to hear good things too.

Karl why don't you just put the 50% guarantee in your signature line, that way you won't have to post it every other week.image You could also write your explanation in word and then just copy and paste it whenever you feel like it.

i'd do it, but i just really, really like occam's razor. if you think about it, it applies to pcgs's 50% guarantee as well.

  • I'm not trying to throw watyer on this, but how can the nickel be MS63 with such a poor date strike?
  • DO you work for PCGS?

  • I don't either.

I wasn't trying to be sarcastic about the buffalo nickel. I was more inquiring as to the characrteristics of that year. In my opinion, if that year generally had a fairly good date strike, this coin has a weak one and it is questionable, to me, as to the grade it was given. I'm not a professional grader, but I've see coins with more luster and stronger strike graded AU 58 etc.

I'm just here to learn like everyone else.

    Dan,

Most likely, the scan is holding back some of the luster- they do that... also, some toning can, in a sense, dull the luster, although the coin remains lustrous as light hits the color- a scan will show that as just being dull.

Also, the scan doesn't show a coin with a way too weak strike- it is a very clean coin, too... maybe a super-strong strike would have yielded a 65 or more?

  • I appreciate the response. I wasn't trying to be "Snippy" thats for sure. I will say the reverse of this coin is gorgeous and deserves the grade 100% (again in my humble opinion).

I think this is a great forum....I appreciate the great posts...even the ones that aren't great!

guidance and direction is always appreciated.

The deficiencies in strike (that coin is very weakly struck), are more than made up for in eye appeal. Properly graded to me. Pretty too!

I agree: it's a nice coin, especially with the color. Is it me, or do 1913-D's seem to be a little "grayer" coin than other issues? Many of the '13-D's I see are dark and dull.

    Whitewashqtr,

I don't know about his, but when I submitted a doctored coin for guarantee, they cut me a check for market value. It was different than what I paid for the coin.

Thanks Russ.. Just wanted to know if other people's experiences were different than mine. Actually, PCGS replaced the coin for me by going to the open market and buying one. I havent received it yet..but I saw a pic and it looks satisfactory.

Hey newbies do not bite yours heads of. I think the general rule is that the coin cannot be graded gem (MS65) if it has a weak strike.

That's actually what I had asked them to do also, but they were unable to find one. Because of that, I had to get stuck with a check for more than I'd paid for it. Damn.
