65 fbl. Just an estimate, I'm not as good with those things as I am Morgans. Looks kinda weak on the obv but is clean and somewhat attractive. don't know what that is by the L but it might affect the grade.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
Casey, it sounds to me as if you just watched the auction. You didn't actually buy the coin correct? It is a beautiful coin. I grade it at MS-64. It would probably make FBL at PCGS, but not at NGC.
I see this GEM as a strong 5, and a possible 6. Full Bell Lines as well. This coin has a very low pop in a 6, this seems like a hell of a find. Wish I would have seen it. What lovely toning... Absolutely noway this coin is a ms64. I just don't see any rub on it, one has to remember in 1959 the master die was badly worn and accounts for the weaker strike on the late 50s Franklins. This may be the prettiest 59p this Kitty has seen...

I hate to bring this up but I have to play investigator for a moment. The other day Baley had a 59 quarter with almost the same toning as this 59 frankie, just not quite as good a photography job. Heres my thoughts. 1. 1959 mint sets were packaged in cello, they dont ever tone like this. 2. Roll coins dont ever tone like this. 3. Paper envelope: Maybe but 1959 really hasnt been that long ago. More likely the toning would be much lighter if it was real. Same for a coin album. 4. This isnt real. Dont buy it. This is AT. Boy some of these people on EBAY are really good!

HMM...thinking back to the excellent thread that Frank posted on toning, one of the things that he mentioned as a sign of AT is that the toning is the same on the lettering as it is in the fields. That does appear to be the case with this coin.
Eagle7: I was so taken by the colors that I didn't even think about AT until you posted. Nowww......you got me thinkin...and taken a long hard look! The upper right quadrant of the obverse has, to my eye, what appears to be textile toning, which of course wouldn't occur on a coin sitting in a mint set. Also, I don't know whats going on down around the lettering near "WE TRUST" but the longer I look at it, the harsher those tone seperation lines look and I don't like it. I think you were playing investigator at just the right time and if I had to vote on the available evidence it would say its AT.
I think it is a 66 coin though. I would second Lucy's observations about the condition of the master die at the time the '59 working dies were made, which account for the mushy obverse strike. Can't get a good read on upper bell lines. FBL based on lower lines for sure, probable based on upper set.
Your right Greg about the blob of color at we trust. That is another dead giveaway. The colors are harsh and thick. Real toning is more opaque. Have fun at the FUN. I cant make it this year, but maybe next year! My name is Mark also. Bunch of them on here.

YIKES! What a difference JMOORE!!! This concerns me... I admit it, I would have been very tempted to bid on the 59 Frankie..... I have yet to bid on a raw coin from Ebay..... This thread has shown good reason's not to..... I have been very lucky to find many nice toned Frankies in person at shows and coin shops..... But on ebay... It's a risky roll of the dice..........

Some toning artists use chemical that can tone coins very quickly and nicely, but over time (one week or more) the colors darken with exposure to light. Could this be the case here? or is it jsut photography??
As for the 59, it looks good to me, but has the same look as the 53. Makes me suspicious.
As for the grade, I own on of the few 59 halves in 66FBL - made the coin myself, and it blows this coin away from both a strike and luster perspective.
For those Franklin folks, what's a 59-P in PCGS 66FBL worth????
I was not the purchaser of this toned Franklin, but I did try. rpholder has had some stunning toned coins lately. I did purchase the toned Barber quarter I posted in another thread. I hope I'm not disappointed once I receive it.
