Buried treasure from my yard.

mdwoodsmdwoods Posts: 5,546 ✭✭✭
I found these marbles and an 185? large cent while I was digging out an area for a patio last summer. The cent has been soaking in olive oil for several months, it has quite a bit of corrosion. The only part of the date visible is the ?85?. It isn't worth much, but it was still kind of neat to find it. Mark

Now that is too cool! Regardless of it's condition, that's a great find. If not for your digging, that cent would have wasted away to nothing.

The marbles are neat too. They look quite old. Are they?

Come to think of it, the marbles were awful clean, and I was bending over with my head to the side, and I suddenly thought, I can hear alot better. Then I looked down and there the marbles were and...

My house is almost 100 years old. The house next door is about 150. Our yard was probably their dump for a while, or maybe some kids buried treasure. The marbles are very old, but I don' know how old.

Could those marbles be some type of bullet from a black powder type of gun?

    Coin looks nice too.

They are very light, I think they are fired clay, but I don't know much about them. Mark

After finding that coin, I think I'd look for a metal detector to borrow or purchase. You may have the next hoard located on your property. Hopefully protected in a container.

Wow, just imagine finding a dozen or so Chain Cents in mint state. With a few other dates thrown in, in nice condition too. image

My granny has a can of those type of marbles in her basement. They were my grandfather's when he was a kid. He was born in 1911.

I believe they are pretty collectable also.

If they are truly marbles and not musket balls, contact Onthespot! She is a board member and a big marble collector!

  • Mark,

They are clay marbles. Some of the first marbles known to man. I have collected marbles for many years. They are plenty available, in used condition. The ones that you have are in nice shape. Congrats!

I buried so wheaties, buffs, mercs, and a SLQ with a note in a jelly jar in by back yard a couple of years ago. I got the idea from some guys on this board.

That's really neat. I live in the country at an old farm place and I dug holes all over my yard and just found junk.

These type of marbles are called crock marbles. They come to the surface of the soil over time and coins sink. Neat to find. Keep on looking. Was there an outhouse?

Something I learned from my metal detecting days many years ago; always check the fuse box of old abondoned farm houses while your tooling around. Many people used pennies behind a bad fuse to provide conductivity until they got around to replacing the fuse. I've never found a valuable penny, but I have found numerous wheaties in the box and behind the fuses.

You might also check the entrance to the crawl space and the path from the back door to the outhouse. When folks were in a hurry their pants were half way down before they got there. Funny but true.

  • A cent and a few marbles. Sounds like high stakes for games back then. Good find!

Did you dig that hole deeper and wider due to your find? I would have dug quite a bit with that encouragement.
