Was getting ready to throw a extra dime on Ebay and was doing the usual inspection to make sure the thing was not a junk coin. Well when inspecting the reverse I noticed the Mint Mark looked a little funny. Put the twenty power loupe to it and it is a RPM for sure. Matched it up to RPM #3 D/D Southwest in the RPM Book for a 1943D Merc Dime.

Now here is what gets me on this one. In the middle of the D on the left side there is what appears to be some more metal showing almost as this is a D over horizontal D. This is not shown in the RPM book. What do you think. Is this just some unexplanable glob of Metal or does it have a chance of being a D over Horizontal D ?

Thanks in advance. BTW, I think I will keep the dime now. Cant believe I missed this before. Sorry if the picture is small but this is the best I could do.

That a tough one...I can't match it up to any 1943D RPM in the 1981 book definitively, it could be one that was discovered since that book was published. With the photo it looks like a D/D/D South & Southeast, and the extra glob of metal to the left of the primary mint mark would be the top serif of the "south" mint mark.

    A couple of choices here...

You could send it in to James Wiles of CONECA for attribution, fee $2.50 if you're a member, $5 if you're not, plus $5 shipping.

You could send it here and I could take a good micro shot of the mint mark and send you the coin plus the micro shot for the amount it would take to ship it home. No fee, in other words....just to try getting answers for you. I can't attribute the coin, but I do know some dime RPM collectors who might be able to help me out with a couple of e-mails (and the photo attached).

    Let me know.

  • Far from an expert on these - but it does look like a D over horizontal D to me.

I see what appears to be the curve of the second D immediately to the south of the first D, and a serif to the left and right of the first D. That looks like a horizontal D. image
