Yet another Guess the Grade: 1807 Half dollar!

It's PCGS, white. To me, this means it must have dipped at some point as I can't see how a silver coin would remain untoned for 195 years. Take a guess.image Answer in 4 hours.

    AU 55.
Rub on jaw cheek hair and breast (color change).
Nice strike, luster. Certainly (IMHO) dipped at some time.

AU53 obverse. Obviously clean, but beautiful. 99% of them have been cleaned. Good luck
finding one that has not. I like this coin alot.

    AU-55, typical open collar strike.

AU58 though it may very well be uncirculated.
  • AU-53, not enough hair detail

Tough call...the coin clearly is not original which is a minus. The 1807's usually are weakly struck and the obverse is a better strike than usual. I would call it EF 45 or at best AU50, however, I am probably being harsh due to originality issues.

Hard to guess with only seeing one side.
    I will guess the holder say's au-50.
  • I'd say PCGS would call this a 55 or 58. I'll guess 58.

Re the color, I agree with WingedLiberty's comment. Virutally all silver coins of this era have been cleaned at least once in their lives - some poorly, some well, some long enough ago to retone nicely.

I don't have the reverse scanned. There is definite wear on the highest points of Liberty, but a significant amount of mint lustre remains in the devices (which is hard to see in a scan), and the strike is OK for an 1807. To me this coin is therfor appropriately graded at AU55. Jim McGuigan got it for me a few years ago from a Stacks sale raw and had it slabbed.
