Analysis of PCGS Jeff Proof/SMS Pop Changes: Interesting Results!

I found an old copy of the PCGS Jeff pop report on my hard drive and like to play with and analyze the numbers. So, having no life at all and lots of time, here are the results: LINK If you cannot open Word files or otherwise have problems, send me a PM with your e-mail and I would be happy to send it to you as an attachment in the format you prefer.

    hey randy

help me out here. what should i choose to open the file with? i have windows 98. without even looking at the link i'll assume that the pops for jeff's in DCAM have remained rather stagnant. i have a 2001 PCGS pop report and they haven't moved much from that.

Al: Just try clicking the link. It should work with Win 98 and IE 4.0 or later. If it does not work, I will e-mail you a copy if you PM your e-mail address. RGL

If a popup opens, you can choose "open" and see if it flies, or if not, click download and save to your desktop or hard drive with a .doc extension.

Link is working for me now, nice analysis.
  • Randy:

Thanks for putting this great analysis together. I agree with your conclusions.

This analysis continues to validate the difficulty in locating certain proof Jeffersons. A couple other summary points on DCAMs:

    1) From years 1938 - 1959, 1153 submissions were made. Only 6 or .5% made DCAM. No PF69 at any designation.

    2) From years 1965 - 1967 (SMS), 467 submissions were made. Only 6 or 1.3% made DCAM. No PF69 at any designation and only 1 PF68.

    Thanks again - Randy.

    hello randy

i finally made it to my e-mail and you should make no excuse for the "long winded" narrative. it was nicely written, informative and i'd like to applaud your effort. i feel confident that the chart couldn't have added much and as such wasn't really missed, at least by me.

your conclusions are the same which we've discussed previously in threads and PM's. i assume you weren't trying to uncover something new, just curious to see the hard facts. some of the dates are difficult to find nicely struck and the cameo for early dates is a bonus. as i delve deeper into the series i gain more respect for the collections already assembled which boast nice, heavily frosted coins. i currently have a 1938, 1967 and several early 70's dates at PCGS trying to fill some of the holes you mentioned.

i was particularly pleased in a strange sort of way to see the DCAM pops of the SMS years grow so slowly. i guess 1967 is a given in CAM and any date in DCAM is a major find. many collectors understimate those three years for condition rarity in DCAM and importance from a numismatic standpoint. i have no problem looking down the road 20 years and seeing the pops and prices of all the SMS denominations in DCAM holding strong. in one of the "speculation threads" i picked and SMS DCAM cent as my choice for the investment coin i'd choose. the only problem is locating one!!!!!!!

i would have to agree with your assessment regarding the late 50's in DCAM and PR68CAM and above. hard coins to find. i'm holding a nice 1957 holdered by NGC as PR69 with very faint cameo and a green holdered 1959 in 68CAM. two dates that just don't show up often are 1956 and 1958 so they're on my watch list. and then there's my NGC 1953 in 68CAM that PCGS won't cross and a 67CAM 1954 that needs to be in a 68 holder. i just wish they'd grade consistent across the series and not pay homage to certain dates . i mean honestly, what's with the black hole for 1953, 1956 and 1958 in DCAM??? i assume that some were made, but where are they?

anyway, enough with my rambling. nice undertaking.

Thanks, Al. I do not disagree at all on the SMS coins ... and 1950s DCAMs -- even CAMs on the earlier ones -- are an absolute bear to pry out of PCGS. The tiniest bit of frost fade on the extreme ends of Monticello (a typical problem in trying to win DCAMs) and you can forget it...
