Another guess the Grade! 1882-CC Morgan

raysrays Posts: 2,373 ✭✭✭✭✭
The scan came out better on this Morgan. The lustre is intense. The scan accentuates the marks. It is from the Carson City mint, presumably originally from a GSA sale.image

really enjoy these "guess the grade" threads...image

    ummmmmm...MS........

do see a few very light contact marks that keep it from 67,in my opinion but i wouldn't be real surprised to hear that it got 67...

this coin is fully struck and lustrous with very clean surfaces...

    MS66 at least...

Id say with the light contact marks in the front facing field, and just a little light marks on the portrait, Id give it a 66.
The overall coin is stunningly superb, I bet in person this coin is truly breathtaking?

I bought this coin as "PQ for the grade" for gray sheet ask in 1995. It is in one of the green label PCGS holders (2nd generation). Perhaps I should re-submit it? I don't know the premium for MS66, I doubt it is much compared to MS65 but I am not a Morgan expert; I got this one for a US Type Set.

Got a picture of the reverse?

Numismedia is about $400 for 65 and $1,100 for 66.
  • I`m stunned! When the picture first popped up for me, I thought 67 right off the bat. I thought about it and decided to go on my first impression. After looking at it again, there are a couple of tiny ticks around the lips. It is a MS65+ and a shot at 66. Listening to the others will give you a better idea whether to upgrade or not. It`s a gorgous coin and a " must keep in your collection " coin.image

It is a stunning coin. Though technically a 65, the eye appeal is such that it could round up to 66. Personally, I feel you have zero risk of a downgrade, so were I you I would put up a grading fee to see if I could find that baby residing in a 66 holder. Risk/reward ratio is definitely in your favor. Good luck and keep us updated! image
  • That's the coin I need !!! I have 1882 in every mint except CC......whaaaaaaaaaaa image

Coin looks like a lock 66 to me, without seeing the back. Normally the back's are nice, but it's always when you get a stunning obverse that the reverse has somehting going on.

It would never make 67 witht he stuff in front of liberty.

I'd certainly pay close to 66 money for the coin, if the coin looks like the scan.

    Actually that's a 5th generation PCGS slab.
I would say the coin is solid for the grade but in my own mind the tick by the mouth keeps it @64 but pcgs gave it a little because the luster, color, & surface and lack of other severe marks make up for it and because the row of reed scuffs by star r3 are barely noticable. They are a little less technical on CC if it has a good "look."
If I cracked it out and tried it raw I think it it would still grade 65 but while it was out of the holder I would dip it to get rid of the tone under the chin but if I saw it in real life I might refrain from the dip because it probably isn't as dark as your pict makes it look like. I still like my whites white. image
Anyway I wouldn't crack it because it might make 64 easier than it would 66.
That's the way I call it from your scan. image

I missed the chance to vote. I was going to guess 65!!! Not really. I was going to say 64. Another super clean portrait, but whatever that is that's going in in front of the portrait will keep this out of a 66 slab IMO. I think the obvious strength of the rest of the coin is what got it in a 65 slab. I think its maxed out.
