I,ll guess to the best of my limited ability. Liberty Cap 1/2c? small date?doubled rim?MS60? Its really dark but I photoshopped it lighter. It has tremendous detail.
The actual coin is lighter than the scan. The 1/1 in the date gives the variety. This coin is ex Gene Reale, is pictured in Ron Manley's book on US Half Cent Die States. It is within the condition census of the varity, which is the most common of the 1797s.
The 1/1 (Cohen-1) is the most common variety of 1797 half cent. This coin is now in a PCGS AU58 holder. The PCGS population is 2 in AU58, one finer (MS63). There are a handful of true mint state pices known. The other PCGS AU58 recently sold for $13,800 as lot 259 in Bower's sale November 2002.
