They have a lot of work to accomplish in the next 6 months to win back the business.
  • More, since I didn't submit anything last year.

    Got Morgan?
  • I have two pending situations with coins that I feel were poorly graded by PCGS. If those can't be resolved satisfactorily, I'll be done with sending them any more of my coins or money.

    Nice chatroom though -

You know, considering the tone of recent posts regarding PCGS policies and new leadership, I have to say I'm finding the current results of the poll rather surprising!
  • IMO : I think overall in the market, they have not totally lost their clout......

I started submitting late last year (about 25 coins total on four or so invoices--8 coins were free), so I will be submitting more. I did have a batch that went bad, but in all fairness to PCGS, their customer service took the time to take the coins to a grader, identify the problems, and give me a call to tell me what was wrong. I will be more carefull of what I send, but they were 100% correct for kicking out those coins. I probably learned more by having that group kicked back, than if I would not have had that issue. I would still be upset if I did not call, because I would have never seen the problems on my own. Now, I can look for some of the problems before I send coins in. All-in-all they are correct for grading the way they do. They seem to be consistant, and they are willing to go over orders to help the submitter understand why the coins are lower grades or no grades.

More, and judging by their grading backlog, there are plenty of other people submitting more right now. All assertions to the contrary, submission levels are doing just fine.

So.... am I to assume all the threads of PCGS bashing for consistency, body bags, customer service is out of proportion to how the board in general truly feels?

PCGS is still the big boys in the grading arena and I don't see anything changing that in the near future.

With modern proofs (which I can repeat consistently, unlike monster toned coins.. unless you make them yourself), there's no comparing the resale value of PCGS to NGC. The NGC slabs just don't sell. And when they do, they fetch ANACS money image And ANACS charges $7 per modern, so doubt I'll be submitting any coins to NGC this year. PCGS and ANACS is where my slab money is going in 2003. PCGS when there's a higher resale value, ANACS when there isn't, whichever improves my profit margin. NGC doesn't seem to do anything for me, except they do go back to 1950 under the modern tier, PCGS goes to 1965 and ANACS only goes to 1979!
  • Since my focus has changed to from modern proofs dated from 54 to 64 back to gold coins, I will continue to use PCGS. Ive never had a problem on gold. My grade and their grade is right on. I dont know what is the problem, me being a dummy i guess, we just dont gee haw on the proof coins from 54 go 64.

NGC goes back to 1955, not 1950. You can get NGC moderns graded for $9.90 if you are a club member and use the online form.

The prices for NGC moderns are getting better. Not great, but better. ANACS suck.

    nwcs,

That assumption would be correct; not just with PCGS, but with any company or service. It is human nature that people are far more likely to complain about problems when they occur than to comment when things go well. There are plenty of people who are, on balance, happy with the service who simply don't speak up.

Logically, if PCGS were as bad as the talk at this board would make them seem, they'd be out of business right now. Do they screw up? Yep, they sure do. I've had my share of problems with them. But, I've also had plenty of good experiences with them - far more than the bad experiences.

  • The only problem I have with PCGS is: When I don't get the grade I expect. But PCGS has been correct in not giving me the grade 99% of the time.

What stinks for me, is the evolution of grading standards by PCGS and NGC over the past many years.

For some years they would not tag, attributes, FBL, FS, etc. What am I to do with my coins that have these attributes but are entoombed in older holders? I damn sure hate spending money on resubmissions. Also the grade standards change, one would thing yearly! Not good

Another problem that I find, is their refusal to tell you what they don't like about a coin. Dang man, don't send it back to me without telling me what is wrong. Does it have a cold, shingles, arthritis or what. Dang.

Now that NCSis becoming prominent on the scene, we can attest that sometimes an AU can become a 64 in the blink of an eye.

Oh dear, all this and I still have a life to worry about.

Glad that collecting is a hobby for me, and not the way I make my living. I would have gone broke long before the time I did!

I plan on submitting more this year. I only submitted coins in Jan 2002 and in Nov 2002. Tho I do have alot of nice coins in my personal collection that I really would like to get slabbed and preserve.
