For lighting, Staples "Ott" not Ott

LakesammmanLakesammman Posts: 17,381 ✭✭✭✭✭
Someone mentioned the other day they had found a Ott light for $30 at Staples. I went there today to check it out. It's a far east knock-off fluorescent light, not the full spectrum Ott light. I would suggest avoiding it as it is a very expensive standard fluorescent light in a cheap case with a non-swivel base.

Anyone have info. on a great price for the Ott light?? I tried Beverleys (someone posted they have a great price) but they are out of stock.

There are lots of sites - the one you posted has the highest prices.

You are probably right i didn't get a chance to shop around. They look like pretty nice lights, might be just what the Doctor ordered for taking coin pic's. (bad choice of words Doctor) image

I mentioned Staples, they sell the natural bulbs for that at Menards. The one at Staples is flourescent. Doesn't bother me because I am switching all the time from flourescent to natural to halogen depending on the coin.
  • I bought mine here, only $41.50 each and they accept PayPal. Just scroll down about half way.

Thanks for the tip - ordered another one. By the way, shipping is cheaper with PayPal than with VISA at this site.

Seems to me like you'd really be better off by buying just the Ott bulb and put it in your own existing lamp.

My wife has an "Ott" brand light from the local sewing store. Are these good lights for looking at coins? I never gave it a thought before seeing this thread. I know it is an "Ott" and it cost a bunch!

You Ott to use it for photographing coins - it's all I've used since Shylock turned me on to it. It really captures the true color of a coin, especially copper. I deleted all my old pics after shooting the coins with the Ott light. I'm buying 2 more and, when they arrive, hope to post a few pics with 4 Ott lights.

Fcloud -- I think Mark mentioned a while back that his wife used them as well. This sewing site sells them bust out retail but explains them a little more. They actually would be great lighting for those of us who spend too much time at a computer terminal.

Lakesammman is cornering the market on them so prices may be going up soon...

I picked up one of these new fangled ott lights today. It sure does give off some nice light. Now i have to learn how to make it produce good photo results.
I took this under an ott light This was the first pic. Tonight i will experiment. I picked an MS 63 coin so i can see the distractions.
